Sign-on bonus of $4,668 available for the successful applicant, paid in 2 installments within 12 months of hire: $2,334 within 30 days of hire date and $2,334 12 months after hire date.

About the role

The primary purpose of this position is to function as the Lead of Steam & Specialized water piping systems (campus recreational pools and wastewater treatment management) for the Campus Maintenance Plumbing Shop. This role serves as the lead technical resource for the operation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repairs of general building steam, specialized water system piping, drains, fittings, valves, valve assemblies, and devices associated with the distribution of steam and specialized water piping systems for heating, washing, fire protection, and the removal of waterborne wastes.

Responsibilities

  • Provide technical support to all technicians/personnel assigned to the Campus Maintenance Plumbing Shop.
  • Perform and/or assist in the training and orientation of new technicians/personnel.
  • Ensure assigned area workload schedules are accomplished as issued; notify the Plumbing Shop Supervisor of any necessary deviations, delays, or early completions.
  • Maintain a proper shop stock of miscellaneous fixtures, control system boards, spare parts, and plumbing/hardware items for repairs.
  • Ensure adequate inventory of equipment/parts is organized and ready for emergency and/or routine repairs.
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of the shop and assigned installation service vehicle.
  • Perform design and engineering reviews of specifications and plans for new buildings, upgrades, and renovations, ensuring compliance with all applicable trade codes.
  • Submit review comments to the Plumbing Shop Supervisor.
  • Consult with equipment/system manufacturers and/or designers for recommended system operating changes or additional equipment requirements to optimize performance.
  • Fill in for the Plumbing Shop Supervisor when unavailable.

Requirements

  • Highly knowledgeable and skilled in working with water and sprinkler system piping, tubing, and plumbing fixtures, including:
    • Water meters, pumps, expansion tanks, backflow arrestors, water filters, UV sterilization lights, water softeners, water heaters, gauges, control valves, and control systems.
    • Sanitary drainage and venting, dual potable water supplies (hot and cold), water pressure booster pumps, pressure reducing valves.
    • Fire/sprinkler heads, irrigation, and well systems.
  • Proficient with specialized plumbing tools, including:
    • Pipe wrenches, flaring pliers, pipe vice, pipe bending machines, pipe cutters, dies, and joining tools such as soldering torches and crimp tools.
  • Familiarity with:
    • Video cameras for inspections of hidden leaks or problems.
    • Hydro jets and high-pressure hydraulic pumps.
    • Environmental benefits and energy savings of hot water heat recycling units.
    • Ecological concerns related to water conservation, shortages, and graywater recovery and treatment systems.
  • Valid North Carolina Driver’s License or ability to obtain one prior to start date.
  • NC State Inspector’s License or ability to achieve certification within six months of hire.
  • Spray Irrigation and Waste Water license for NC and/or a CPO certificate.
