Summary

Under general supervision of the Chief Therapist and Medical Directors of Radiation Oncology and Gamma Knife, provides leadership, guidance and assistance for Radiation Therapists. Performs administrative functions as necessary for the efficient operation of the department and performs duties of a Radiation Therapist as needed.

Responsibilities

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

- Provides assistance in establishing and maintaining techniques and standards for quality control and assurance for the technical areas of Radiation Oncology and Gamma Knife. - Orients new employees to departmental policies and provides functional guidance and leadership in treatment procedures both in Gamma Knife and Radiation Oncology. - Provides assistance in work schedules, staffing needs and daily technical coverage. Provides input in Radiation Oncology and Gamma Knife employee performance evaluations. Recommends disciplinary action as necessary. - Interprets computerized treatment plans including use of immobilization and blocking devices. Carries out physicians’ prescriptions for dose. Maintains an awareness of dose tolerance levels for certain organs of the body. - Checks and operates equipment and machinery such as linear accelerators, simulators, and computer terminals for treatment planning and administering treatments. Performs quality assurance checks to ensure that machinery is functioning properly. - Monitors patients and treatment to assure safety and accuracy. Remains alert to patients’ reactions to treatment and changes in physical and mental status. Alerts physicians to these reactions and/or changes. - Maintains radiation safety rules and regulations for the protection of self, patient, visitors other staff members and visitors. - May be responsible for maintaining necessary supplies and materials and requisitioning as needed. - Performs all necessary functions, including but not limited to staff assignments, billing, audits, statistical data, protocol management and problem solving in the absence of the Chief Therapist. TJC readiness. - Attends departmental and interdepartmental conferences as required. - Maintains a level knowledge and expertise in the professional disciplines and educational methodologies by continuing professional development and participating in ongoing independent study, education-related professional activities and affiliations as well as other scholarly activities including existing and new federal and State requirements in Radiation Oncology.

Minimum Qualifications

BASIC KNOWLEDGE:

- Completion of an accredited program in Radiation Therapy Technology. - Registered through the American Registry of Radiological Technologist with current license to practice in the State of Rhode Island. - Bachelor Degree matriculated or achieved. - Demonstrated knowledge of theory, technique, and procedures of Radiation Therapy and Gamma Knife. - Supervisory ability to effectively assist in planning, directing and evaluating technical staff. - Both visual acuity and physical ability to accurately lift and position patients and machinery for treatment. - Demonstrated knowledge and skills necessary to provide care to patients throughout the life span with consideration of the aging processes, human development stages and cultural patterns in each step of the care process.

EXPERIENCE:

- At least five years experience as a Radiation Therapist with increasing responsibility in a hospital based department.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements

Possibility of exposure to low energy radiation. Hazards are minimized by observing safety precautions. Wears a film badge to monitor exposure. Continuous standing and walking.

Independent Action

Performs independently within the department’s policies and practices. Refers specific complex problems to the supervisor when clarification of the departmental policies and procedures are required.
