Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit

Position Summary

The Department of Radiation Oncology at the University of North Carolina seeks a lead faculty proton medical physicist for the North Carolina Cancer Center. The North Carolina Cancer Center is part of the UNC Health Care System and is based in Chapel Hill, NC. Currently staffed with 13 Radiation Oncologists, 7 Dosimetrists, 12 Medical Physicists, and 1 IT specialist, the center is equipped with advanced equipment including 3 Elekta accelerators, a CyberKnife system, a Mobetron intraoperative accelerator, an Elekta HDR system, a VariSeed LDR prostate system, a Philips large bore CT simulator, and a recently installed Philips MR simulator. The center is preparing to install a Varian TrueBeam and a Mevion S250-FIT Proton Therapy System in 2027. Clinical treatment planning systems (TPS) include Raystation TPS, Accuray Precision TPS for CyberKnife, Oncentra HDR Brachy TPS, and VariSeed LDR Brachy TPS. Ancillary systems include VisionRT. The lead proton faculty physicist is expected to start in September 2026 to assist with the installation and commissioning of the Mevion S250-FIT system, and to lead proton therapy physics services once the system is operational. A secondary proton faculty physicist will join shortly after.

The lead proton faculty physicist will collaborate with stakeholders to establish infrastructure, workflows, and policies and procedures for physics-related tasks and patient treatments. They will be actively involved in clinical, research, and teaching activities within the Department and the School of Medicine. Clinical duties include overseeing the acceptance and commissioning of the Mevion S250-FIT system, acquiring dosimetry data, and commissioning proton treatment planning in RayStation. After the system's operation, they will lead proton therapy physics services, ensuring accurate and safe treatment delivery and patient safety.

Research responsibilities include pursuing extramural funding opportunities. The department supports a CAMPEP-accredited Medical Physics Residency Program, and the lead physicist is expected to mentor residents.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

  • A PhD in Medical Physics/Physics/Engineering or related field
  • American Board of Radiology (ABR)/American Board of Medical Physics (ABMP) certification
  • CAMPEP-accredited residency graduation

The ideal candidate should possess strong technical skills, a passion for research and teaching, and excellent communication abilities.
