About This Role
This role sits at the intersection of operational technology (OT) controls, SCADA, and enterprise data. The work involves deploying Ignition SCADA, Rockwell Automation PLCs, and open industrial protocols to provide deep, trustworthy visibility into mechanical plants, electrical distribution, and power quality—without locking customers into brittle or opaque architectures. The team is seeking a senior-level PLC/SCADA Engineer who demonstrates strong technical judgment, systems thinking, and the ability to design solutions that remain robust and maintainable for years after deployment.
Scope of Position
As a Senior PLC/SCADA Controls Engineer, you will serve as a technical authority for data center automation and electrical power monitoring systems. Responsibilities include leading the design of Ignition-based SCADA platforms integrated with Rockwell PLC control systems, electrical power monitoring devices, and third-party subsystems. You will influence system design, modeling, data flow, and operator interactions across single sites and multi-site portfolios. This role carries technical ownership, cross-disciplinary influence, and mentorship expectations. You will be the go-to resource when system behavior and long-term reliability matter—not just whether the system “works.”
Key Responsibilities
- PLC System Design & Development
- Develop and maintain PLC applications using Rockwell Automation platforms including ControlLogix, CompactLogix, and GuardLogix (where applicable).
- Design remote I/O architectures and scalable control systems for chiller managers, chiller lineup controllers, pumping systems, thermal energy storage systems, and HVAC/process cooling applications.
- Create reusable software standards, Add-On Instructions (AOIs), and programming templates.
- Maintain PLC documentation, functional descriptions, and sequence of operation implementations.
- SCADA & Ignition Development
- Develop supervisory applications using Ignition by Inductive Automation.
- Configure OPC UA communications, UDT libraries, tag structures, alarm strategies, and historical data collection.
- Design dashboard and visualization interfaces.
- Support deployment of enterprise-scale SCADA systems for monitoring and control of critical infrastructure.
- Implement standardized naming conventions and scalable tag models.
- Industrial Networking & Communications
- Design and troubleshoot industrial Ethernet networks.
- Configure communications using EtherNet/IP, BACnet/IP, Modbus TCP, and OPC UA.
- Support managed switches, VLANs, routing, and redundant network architectures.
- Integrate third-party equipment including chillers, VFDs, power monitoring devices, UPS systems, generators, CRAHs, CDUs, and metering systems.
- System Integration
- Develop integration strategies for mechanical and electrical systems.
- Coordinate with equipment vendors to validate communications and operational sequences.
- Perform point mapping, protocol validation, and interface testing.
- Support cybersecurity and OT network requirements.
- Testing & Commissioning Support
- Support Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT), Site Acceptance Testing (SAT), Integrated Systems Testing (IST), and Functional Performance Testing (FPT).
- Troubleshoot controls, network, and field device issues during startup and commissioning.
- Create commissioning procedures and checkout documentation.
- Support field technicians and commissioning providers during project execution.
- Technical Leadership
- Provide technical guidance and mentoring to entry-level and mid-level engineers.
- Participate in design reviews and software quality reviews.
- Identify project risks early and recommend mitigation strategies.
- Support customer-facing technical discussions and design workshops.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree with 4+ years of HVAC/Building Automation experience or Associate Degree with 6+ years of HVAC/Building Automation experience or High School Diploma or GED with 8+ years of HVAC/Building Automation experience.
- 4+ years of experience designing and supporting SCADA and control systems in live facilities.
- 4+ years of Rockwell Automation PLC experience with ControlLogix/CompactLogix platforms.
- Ability to travel up to 25%.
- Must have unrestricted authorization to work in the USA (no visa sponsorship available).
Preferred Qualifications
- Ignition SCADA (Inductive Automation) experience at scale.
- UDT-driven designs, alarm pipelines and strategies, and gateway configuration, redundancy, and performance tuning.
- Data center or other mission-critical infrastructure experience, including central utility plants, electrical power distribution and monitoring, and redundant system architectures.
- Strong understanding of industrial Ethernet and OT networking.
- Experience integrating third-party electrical devices such as chillers, CRAHs/CRAHUs, power quality meters, breakers, UPS systems, and generators.
- Experience designing and implementing HVAC/Building Automation control systems.
- Strong Rockwell Automation expertise including Studio 5000, ControlLogix, and CompactLogix.
- Experience with PLC programming fundamentals and the ability to clearly communicate complex technical concepts to engineers, operators, and stakeholders.
