Lead Piping Materials Engineer

Linde Engineering · Tonawanda, NY · 2 wk ago
Management$89k–$154k/yrFull-time

About the role

In this role, you will lead piping materials engineering for small to mid-sized industrial gas projects from early design through construction support, coordinating internal and outsourced resources to deliver specifications/pipe classes, material selection, and procurement support.

Responsibilities

  • Lead material selection based on process conditions and corrosion environment; ensure code compliance (ASME/ASTM/API/DIN/ISO/NACE) and verify compatibility, including oxygen service suitability.
  • Develop and maintain detailed piping component and procurement specifications, including piping material specifications and data sheets for pipe, fittings, flanges, valves, gaskets, bolting, and specialty items, ensuring full component/material compatibility with project design requirements.
  • Evaluate corrosion risks based on process fluids and environmental conditions; specify appropriate corrosion allowances and recommend coatings, linings, or alloy upgrades, and ensure required material testing/verification completed.
  • Assess material suitability for thermal and mechanical loading in high-temperature, cryogenic, and high-pressure service, specifying materials that will withstand expected stresses without deformation, cracking, or fatigue.
  • Lead procurement and vendor technical support: develop requisitions/bid packages, perform technical bid evaluations, review/approve vendor drawings and submittals, manage deviations, and support inspection/expediting as needed.
  • Supporting reliability and mechanical integrity programs by providing materials engineering input (damage mechanisms, corrosion/material upgrades, QA/QC requirements) and by supporting construction/commissioning activities (field queries, punch list resolution, turnover documentation).
  • Prepare and maintain piping material class (PMC) documents, piping specifications, catalogs, supplier documentation, and procurement data on readiness for shipment.
  • Estimate discipline hours and coordinate workshare execution; develop/maintain discipline procedures and templates aligned with applicable codes and standards.
  • Evaluate oxygen system design (flow/pressure, velocity limits, ignition risks), approve oxygen-compatible materials and components, enforce oxygen cleanliness and contamination control, and safeguard/transferring critical oxygen safety knowledge and design assumptions.

Requirements

You have a bachelor’s degree in engineering and breadth and depth knowledge in piping materials engineering and working knowledge of other fields. 8+ years of experience in piping materials for industrial gas, LNG, natural gas, refining, petrochemicals, chemicals, or similar industries, including understanding of applicable codes and regulations for facility design and engineering. PE license or EIT certification (with progress toward PE licensure) preferred.

Qualifications

Positive attitude with the ability to adapt work schedule to accommodate project specific needs. Advanced computer skills with Microsoft Office software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.), Outlook, and Adobe Acrobat. Familiarity with piping material specification databases and engineering design software such as Linde Material Information System (LMI), Piping Export Data (PED), SmartPlant Materials, AutoPIPE, Caesar II, SAP, or similar tools. Detailed understanding of Plant Design Engineering disciplines (Civil, Structural, Piping Material, Pipe Stress Analysis, Piping Design, and 3D CAD Applications).

Skills

Willingness to travel domestically and internationally up to 25%, including potential extended assignments at project sites (1–3 months), is required for this role.

Benefits

The salary range for this role is $88,875 - $154,050 USD annually. Additional compensation may vary depending on the position and organizational level.
