Pay
The hourly pay range is $34.170 – $49.370, with a midpoint of $44.090. The actual pay rate and pay grade will depend on factors such as years of experience, unique skills and abilities, education, alignment with similar internal candidates, marketplace factors, and employer business practices.
Responsibilities
- Assists Pharmacy management in providing pharmaceutical services that support the mission, values, and philosophy of Pharmacy Services and Sharp HealthCare.
- Partners with the leadership team to support day-to-day operations and supervises pharmacy technician staff.
- Leads ongoing performance improvement projects and provides operational, developmental, and quality assurance/improvement support for technician programs.
Department efficiency and effectiveness
- In collaboration with management, supervises and regularly interacts with pharmacy technicians to assess staffing and workload needs, ensuring operational efficiency and quality of services.
- Promotes staff accountability and empowerment through formal and informal mechanisms.
- Monitors completion of daily work assignments of technical staff and assists as necessary.
- Assists with tracking technical staff productivity and preparing schedules for technical staff.
- Handles day-to-day scheduling issues (e.g., sick calls, staff flexing).
- Serves as the primary interface with internal customers for resolving technician operations issues.
- Communicates pertinent issues to the leadership team and proposes solutions to improve department efficiency.
Human resources management
- Assists with staff interviewing, hiring, promotion decisions, and evaluation of personnel, including coaching, counseling, development, and corrective action.
- Ensures timely completion of staff performance appraisals, competencies (new hire and annual/ongoing), and regulatory requirements.
- Manages staff time and attendance, ensuring lunch and break relief is provided.
- Supports workplace safety and ergonomic improvement initiatives; enforces compliance with measures to reduce employee injury.
- Ensures injuries and workers' compensation claims are reported and filed in a timely manner.
Medication safety and use
- Proactively identifies potential medication safety improvement opportunities (e.g., look-alike/sound-alike medication storage, delivery/security issues, inventory management).
- Works with Pharmacy Administration to develop, implement, and monitor programs addressing medication use/safety surveillance initiatives.
- Prepares performance improvement and monitoring reports, providing data as required by pharmacy management.
- Leads performance improvement projects using HRO principles and Lean Six Sigma tools, ensuring clear timelines, outcome metrics, and communication/sustainment plans.
Project management
- Provides ongoing support and performance improvement recommendations for information technology projects (e.g., CPOE, Bedside Barcoding, OnBase).
- Supports regulatory improvements, including USP797, USP795, and USP800 initiatives.
- Contributes to medication safety initiatives and efforts.
- Provides implementation and ongoing support for automation technologies (e.g., EMR, Pyxis MedStation, Pyxis C2 Safe, OnBase, Automix, Euclid Re-packaging, PDX).
Regulatory requirements
- Collaborates with Director, Managers, Senior Specialists, Operations, and Clinical Supervisors to standardize, update, and maintain policies and procedures.
- Assists in the development and implementation of policies and procedures.
- Ensures compliance with Licensing Board, Federal, State, Regulatory, Safety, and TJC requirements.
- Monitors completion of quality assurance documentation required by regulatory agencies and follows up on compliance or documentation issues.
- Holds direct reports accountable to all regulatory requirements and Sharp Policies and procedures.
Training and education
- Contributes to the development and implementation of orientation programs for new pharmacy technicians and orients new pharmacists to pharmacy technician programs.
- Evaluates and monitors staff training needs and trains technical staff.
- Provides technical guidance and computer training to staff, serving as a department resource.
Professional Development
- Attends professional educational opportunities as appropriate.
- Maintains current knowledge of pharmacy services topics by attending conferences and reviewing journals and literature.
- Incorporates new information and best practices into the work environment.
Requirements
- Education pursuant to licensure.
- 3 years of Pharmacy Technician experience in a hospital pharmacy environment or equivalent healthcare setting.
- California Pharmacy Technician License (TCH) – CA State Board of Pharmacy (REQUIRED).
Preferred Qualifications
- 1 year in a leadership role.
- Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) – Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PREFERRED).
Skills
- Computer skills, particularly in pharmacy computer systems, Microsoft Office programs (Word, Excel, Teams).
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
