About the role

Under general supervision, leads crew in a variety of cleaning, maintenance, and/or landscaping duties within County parks buildings, grounds, parks facilities, campsites, ballparks, and recreation sites.

Responsibilities

  • Leads crew work activities; performs tasks including mowing grass, weeding plant beds, pruning trees, trimming and edging landscaping.
  • Cleans facilities, grounds, pavilions, campsites, ballparks, and other recreation facilities.
  • Performs maintenance and construction of recreation facilities and irrigation systems, including electrical work, plumbing, carpentry, masonry, and painting.
  • Provides oversight and guidance to Parks maintenance and custodial personnel in assigned work, workplace safety, and other parks maintenance activities.
  • Performs preventive maintenance and operates a variety of maintenance-related tools, landscape maintenance, and heavy equipment (e.g., mowers, weed eaters, tree trimmers, edgers).
  • Loads, hauls, and unloads equipment, materials, and supplies safely; performs vehicle and equipment checks and preventive maintenance.
  • Assists in snow removal and ice control as needed.
  • Performs support and clean-up activities, including restroom cleaning, sweeping, and handling of Parks and Recreation materials.
  • Works around moving equipment and in various outdoor weather conditions.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Equivalent of a high school diploma and a valid driver’s license.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of direct work experience in a recreation department and/or in landscaping, construction work, or a related field.
  • Knowledge of equipment manuals, work orders, and documentation related to County parks and recreational facilities maintenance.
  • Knowledge of Hamilton County policies and procedures, as well as relevant Federal, State, and County codes and regulations relating to building maintenance and workplace safety.
  • Knowledge of County geography, parks, and recreational facilities.
  • Skill in reading, interpreting, and applying Federal and State rules, regulations, and County policies.
  • Skill in operating hand and power tools, landscaping and construction equipment, and interpreting equipment manuals, engineering specifications, and drawings.
  • Skill in establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with the public, department staff, other County departments, and contractors.
  • Skill in landscaping and plant care.

Physical Requirements

  • Moderate physical effort involving considerable walking and standing with intermittent sitting and driving.
  • Frequently required to stand, talk, hear, walk, sit, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, and crawl.
  • Must frequently lift and carry/move up to 25 pounds and occasionally up to 100 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required: close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
  • Regularly works in outside weather conditions, near moving mechanical parts, and in wet or humid conditions.
  • Frequently exposed to vibration; may work in high, precarious places, and be exposed to fumes, airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and electrical shock risks.
  • Noise level in the work environment is usually loud.

Additional Information

This position is identified as “safety sensitive” under 49 CFR Part 40 and is subject to drug and alcohol testing, including post-offer pre-employment, reasonable cause, post-accident, random testing, and return-to-duty follow-up.

Regular visits to County facilities and work sites are required. Prior to operating a County-owned vehicle, employees must complete the HC Defensive Driving course and/or an Emergency Vehicle Operations Course (EVOC).

Work is primarily in-person and requires regular, punctual attendance, including potential overtime, holidays, weekends, and irregular hours with short notice.
