Lead Painter - Coatings & Linings

The Tepa Companies, established in 2005 and owned by the Paskenta Band of Nomlaki Indians, deliver comprehensive and sustainable solutions to federal, state, local, and private-sector clients throughout the United States. This tribally owned enterprise works independently and collaboratively to provide construction, engineering, environmental, industrial, staffing, and technology services.

About the role

We are seeking a Lead Painter to lead and assist industrial painting and coatings crews in the safe, efficient, and quality-focused completion of assigned work. This working lead position provides day-to-day direction, technical guidance, and support to crew members while performing hands-on industrial coating and surface preparation activities. The Lead Painter works under the direction of the Foreman and supports project completion in accordance with specifications, schedules, safety requirements, and quality standards. When the Foreman is not on site, the Lead Painter assumes direct authority and responsibility.

This position requires frequent travel to project sites across the continental United States (CONUS) and outside the continental United States (OCONUS).

Responsibilities

• Perform surface preparation and application of industrial coatings to aboveground storage tanks and other surfaces in a safe, productive, and quality-focused manner.
• Execute manual labor tasks associated with industrial painting, abrasive blasting, coatings, and linings operations for commercial and government projects.
• Conduct coatings-related activities including operating abrasive blast equipment, shoveling spent blast abrasive, mixing industrial coatings, and applying coatings to specified thicknesses.
• Communicate daily work assignments and expectations to crew members; assist the Foreman in coordinating daily activities.
• Participate in daily tailgate safety meetings; communicate safety requirements, job hazards, and work expectations to crew members.
• Assist the Foreman in identifying and resolving issues related to work activities, equipment, materials, and changing site conditions.
• Respond quickly to changing site conditions, assess impacts, and communicate concerns to the Foreman.
• Maintain open communication with the Foreman and site staff regarding task execution, work progress, quality, safety, and project completion.
• Report quality, safety, production, equipment, and personnel concerns to the Foreman in a timely manner.
• Support the Division Quality Program and operate under the authority of the SSPC Quality Control Supervisor for assigned quality-related responsibilities.
• Adhere to Tepa and Goshawk Safety and Health policies and procedures to prevent injuries and illnesses on project work sites.
• Mentor and guide individuals with less experience; monitor work quality, inspect materials and workmanship, and implement quality control measures.
• Facilitate communication between team members and management; address challenges and adapt to changing conditions on the job site.
• Provide guidance to resolve issues quickly and maintain productivity.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED preferred.
• 2+ years of experience with large-scale, multi-phased industrial coatings projects, including internal and external tank coatings.
• 3+ years of experience performing industrial painting, abrasive blasting, or industrial coating activities.
• Previous experience as a lead worker, crew lead, or senior craft worker in industrial coatings, or demonstrated leadership potential.
• Familiarity with general construction and OSHA requirements.
• Proficiency in applying industrial coatings at specified thickness to complex structures using brush, roll, and spray equipment (abrasive blast pots, conventional spray pots/guns, airless spray pumps/guns, plural component spray equipment).
• Ability to listen, understand, follow, and transmit written and oral instructions in English.
• Strong organizational skills; ability to record and present information clearly and concisely.
• Ability to adapt to changes in site conditions, solve problems quickly, and shift tasks as necessary to meet project goals.
• Flexibility to work day or night shifts as required by project conditions.
• Proactive approach to identifying and addressing potential unsafe conditions.
• Knowledge of first aid and applicable safety precautions.
• Willingness to travel frequently to CONUS and OCONUS project sites.
• Reliable transportation to and from work sites.
• Ability to pass a background check required for access to US military installations.
• Valid driver’s license.
• OSHA 30-hour General or Construction Safety and Health training within the last 5 years.
• AMPP Coatings Application Specialist Level 1 certification (preferred).
• AMPP/NACE Coatings Inspector Program Level 1 certification (preferred).
