Lead Medical Assistant
About the role
As the Lead Medical Support Specialist at Concentra, you will provide work leadership to a team of Medical Support Specialists (MSS) under the direction of the Center Operation Director (COD). Your role ensures clinical care is executed and exceptional service is delivered to all customers. You will complete and delegate tasks to maintain compliance with policies and procedures while supporting patient flow. Additionally, you will perform routine medical and testing procedures under the direct supervision of the treating clinician and support other facility areas, including registration and referral management.
Responsibilities
Medical Support Duties
- Perform Department of Transportation (DOT) and Non-DOT drug and alcohol testing
- Prepare patients for physical examinations, including taking vital signs and any required or requested ancillary testing such as vaccines, injections, phlebotomy, pulmonary function tests, audiogram testing, and respirator fit testing
- Perform rapid screening tests (influenza, strep, mono, glucose, etc.)
- Assist providers during examination and treatment
- Perform routine medical procedures as ordered by the treating clinician and triage emergent patients as needed
- Prepare and assist clinicians with procedure set-up and injury care
- Apply bandages, dressings, and splints as ordered by the treating clinician
- Dispense medications and Durable Medical Equipment (DME) as ordered by the treating clinician in accordance with state regulations
- Complete quality assurance activities on equipment, medical devices, and testing processes used in the center
- Maintain supplies, clean rooms and equipment, and stock exam rooms
- Maintain and operate all medical devices and equipment, including calibration and record-keeping in accordance with current policy and procedures
- Notify leadership immediately if equipment is not functioning properly, supplies are needed, or the facility is not operating as expected
- Assist with patient flow and volume in partnership with center leadership
- Keep patients informed of expected wait times during all aspects of the center visit
- Perform clerical tasks in both the front and back office associated with patient care and proper record-keeping; ensure accuracy in record-keeping and documentation
- Cross-train to perform Patient Service Specialist duties: greet patients, obtain authorization, check in/out, communicate wait times, answer multi-line telephone system, and distribute employer results/paperwork as needed
- Follow HIPAA guidelines and safety rules
- Attend center staff meetings or huddles as required
- Participate in initial and ongoing training as required
- Assist in maintaining a neat, clean, and orderly appearance throughout the facility
- Perform Human Performance Evaluations under the direction of a certified clinician or therapist
Lead Duties
- Assign duties and responsibilities for MSS staff while monitoring patient flow
- Maintain all medical equipment and medical devices and facilitate maintenance as needed
- Maintain safety and accuracy in testing/treating patients by ensuring performance of daily, weekly, and monthly maintenance and quality control/quality assurance activities of medical equipment
- Ensure the medical center maintains appropriate stocking of supplies, equipment, medications, testing, and treatment equipment for safe and proper patient treatment
- Facilitate completion of any applicable training, including clinical competency training that occurs monthly for MSS staff
Qualifications
- Vocational/Technical/Business School education level
- Medical Assistant Certification from an accredited school (credentials in the state of employment in accordance with state requirements and applicable regulations) or Military Medical Specialist with current Medical Assistant credentials in the state of employment
- Drug Screen Collection, Breath Alcohol Certification, and Hair and Oral Fluids Collection Certifications
- At least six months or more of medical assistant experience
- Knowledge of medical procedures and medical terminology
- Working knowledge of occupational medicine requirements (state-specific) preferred
