Lead Maintenance Mechanic

About the role

The Lead Mechanic is responsible for the installation, troubleshooting, cleaning, inspecting, and maintenance of mechanical equipment throughout the facility in a safe and professional manner. They will indirectly lead and prioritize Mechanical Maintenance daily activities, working with the on-shift Operations Supervisor(s) to ensure Mechanics have the necessary tooling and materials to complete Work Orders effectively. The Lead Mechanic reports all Mechanical Maintenance activities to their direct Supervisor and the facility management team in a timely manner.

Responsibilities

• Reviews and performs immediate oversight, ensuring work orders and requisitions are completed and documents all critical or pertinent information on a routine basis
• Demonstrates proficiency with Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) software (Tabware)
• Available to work scheduled and unscheduled overtime, respond to emergency repairs during off-hours, and be on call
• Troubleshoots mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic equipment, diagnoses problems, and makes necessary repairs
• Operates mobile equipment including industrial forklifts, manlifts, skid steer loaders, and other mobile equipment
• Performs preventive and repair maintenance procedures safely, environmentally compliant, and professionally with minimal supervision, adhering to Federal and State Regulations and Company policies
• Identifies and repairs potential safety hazards
• Dons all necessary PPE and safely works at heights, in confined spaces, and other precarious locations
• Communicates effectively via radio using three-part communication
• Actively participates and supports operations functions, including internal equipment inspections, fire watch, and cleaning of work areas
• Uses various machine shop equipment such as bandsaws, drill presses, Bridgeports, stationary grinders, and parts washers
• Proficiently identifies, safely uses, and maintains hand tools and portable power tools for routine maintenance tasks
• Travels to other company facilities for technical support when required
• Takes proactive measures to address improvement opportunities
• Assists in training other employees and directs assigned personnel to safely and efficiently complete maintenance tasks
• Assumes increased levels of responsibility and performs lesser-skilled duties when required or requested
• Completes Corporate and Plant Training Programs within the prescribed time frame
• Identifies and effectively uses basic and precision measuring tools to calculate lengths, surface areas, and volumes for maintenance tasks
• Follows standard safety and environmental procedures, corrects hazards, and reports them to the Shift Supervisor immediately
• Reads, understands, and applies information from lockout/tagout procedures, safety rules, job hazard analyses, operating instructions, and procedure manuals
• Maintains and follows all Company environmental compliance, health, and safety requirements, policies, procedures, and rules
• Completes all required Environmental Management System and Compliance Training
• Works rotating shifts if requested
• Communicates clearly and concisely both verbally and in writing, including via intercom, two-way radio, or face-to-face
• Anticipates typical problems, identifies potential or recurring issues, and takes appropriate action
• Provides expertise on equipment repairs and references O&M Manuals to support the Mechanical Maintenance shop with specific work orders
• Serves as a Facility Subject Matter Expert (SME) for operating equipment in a Waste-to-Energy facility or similar industry, including chain & flight conveyors, belt conveyors, hydraulic and pneumatic equipment, overhead cranes, and various pumps
• Proficient in welding practices and serves as a facility SME, including SMAW, GTAW, GMAW, brazing, and soldering processes

Requirements

• High School diploma or GED (preferred)
• Technical schooling experience (preferred)
• Minimum of 8 years' experience in the Industrial or Power Industry Maintenance Field, or a minimum of 2 years' experience as a 1st class Mechanic
• Proficient with Microsoft Software (Excel, Word, Office, etc.)
• Ability to read and record measurements with precision
• Proficient in welding, soldering, brazing, and pipe fitting
• Maintains a positive work environment by acting and communicating effectively with customers, clients, vendors, co-workers, and management
• Licenses as required by Local, State, Federal, Environmental, and/or Health/Safety Regulatory agencies

Physical Requirements

• Handles tools and equipment requiring fine motor skills
• Reaches with hands and arms
• Climbs and walks on heights often greater than 4 feet
• Occasionally lifts equipment weighing up to 50 lbs
