Lead Lab Assistant - Specimen Operations

About the role

This position is integral to the laboratory team and involves supporting patient testing. It requires a two-year commitment and is not eligible for visa sponsorship.

Responsibilities

  • Assists and works cooperatively with the management team in managing duties and activities of the work unit.
  • Facilitates workflow by performing a variety of clerical and processing duties such as inventory, filing, stocking, and rotating inventory.
  • Trains and continues education of staff.
  • Maintains confidentiality of employee concerns and issues.
  • Performs pre-analytic specimen processing, operates laboratory and office equipment, enters information and test orders into the laboratory computer system, and responds to phone calls regarding laboratory testing information.
  • Ensures correct patient identification on specimens and resolves pre-analytic specimen-related issues.
  • Manages work unit supply inventory and operates automated systems.

Qualifications

  • Associate's degree OR High School diploma or equivalent and 2 years work experience including clinical laboratory and/or other relevant experience.
  • Associate’s degree in a health or science field preferred.
  • Previous experience or knowledge of computers and keyboarding, telephone operations, and other office equipment desired.
  • Ability to accurately read specimen labels and work with numbers to prevent mislabeling.
  • Must be organized, able to prioritize, and work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Must possess good human relations skills and be able to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Must be able to work independently and in a team environment.
  • Must be able to accommodate scheduling adjustments, off-shifts, holidays, and weekends.
  • Requires the ability to be attentive to details and adhere to strict safety requirements for handling chemicals, reagents, and infectious agents.
  • DLMP/MCS employees with less than 2 years in their current lab/position must obtain an early release approval from their supervisor.
