About the role

We are looking for an Engineering Technician with Electrical Controls experience to join our 1st shift team at our Oral Care Plant located in Grand Rapids, MI. The Engineering Technician will troubleshoot, service, and repair automation systems, computerized systems, and robotic work cells, while providing mentoring and technical direction to technicians. This role involves developing, designing, implementing, and validating equipment changes or new installations, as well as leading the Electrical Apprenticeship program.

Responsibilities

  • Perform routine and emergency diagnostic checks, monitoring, and repairs on automated systems, including troubleshooting mechanical, electrical, or computer-related issues.
  • Troubleshoot, service, and repair computerized systems and robotic devices designed to reduce human interaction.
  • Troubleshoot control systems such as PLC programs, motor VFDs, and other electronic components.
  • Maintain, modify, and troubleshoot Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC) and Human Machine Interfaces (HMI).
  • Assist with controls program logic and automation on and off shift as needed.
  • Troubleshoot various electrical power profiles effectively.
  • Create, organize, and maintain documentation, including prints, schematics, and PLC programs.
  • Provide instructions and guidance to ensure adherence to Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and safety standards.
  • Develop, train, and support the electrical apprenticeship program.
  • Work with engineers on capital projects, including equipment installation, qualifications, and risk assessments.
  • Assist in developing preventive maintenance (PM) plans and complete safety/quality audits.
  • Identify and implement improvements to enhance productivity, quality, and cost reduction.
  • Perform machine repair as required and provide mentoring to maintenance and operations teams.
  • Support the effective implementation of Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) requirements.

Requirements

  • High School Degree or equivalent.
  • 5-8 years’ experience in a maintenance or engineering role servicing industrial equipment.
  • DOL Electrical Journeymen Certificate.
  • PLC programming and troubleshooting experience.
  • Ability to read and write electrical and PLC documentation.
  • Safe working knowledge of electrical and mechanical activities.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Training in electrical systems, electronics, programmable logic controllers, variable frequency drives, and motion control.
  • Experience with Beckhoff Automation PLC and HMI.
  • Working knowledge of robotics (e.g., Fanuc).
  • Demonstrated experience with vision inspection systems (e.g., Cognex, Keyence).
  • AutoCAD software experience.
  • Knowledge of FDA Rules and Regulations.
