As a Lead Custodian, you will ensure facilities are clean, safe, and well-maintained while supporting shift custodians through on-the-job training and oversight.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee and ensure Day Custodian(s) and Night Custodian(s) perform their assigned duties.
  • Inspect the quality of work performed by Day Custodian(s) and Night Custodian(s).
  • Report to your assigned Supervisor about the quality of services performed by Night Cleaning Service, Night Custodian(s), and Day Custodian(s).
  • Assist your Supervisor with payroll and HR issues for Day Custodian(s) and Night Custodian(s) by communicating concerns to the Facilities Supervisor.
  • Clean assigned interior areas: hallways, restrooms, offices, classrooms, multi-purpose rooms, and other areas as directed.
  • Maintain exterior areas: perimeter of the school building, parking lot, playground, windows, and other assigned areas.
  • Empty trash from all receptacles.
  • Dust FF&E, window sills, air vents, and other assigned areas.
  • Clean and sterilize restroom facilities.
  • Clean up bodily messes (vomit, feces, urine, blood) in accordance with training.
  • Remove waste in the cafeteria for breakfast and lunch; assist with cleaning cafeteria tables and floors.
  • Sterilize high-use areas to reduce the spread of bacteria and harmful agents.
  • Assist the Head Custodian, if applicable, with cleaning projects or tasks.
  • Travel to nearby schools or warehouse/storage as required.
  • Participate in training programs to increase skills and proficiency related to job assignments.
  • Review current developments and literature related to janitorial responsibilities.
  • Ensure adherence to OSHA and maximum safety procedures.
  • Perform other duties as delegated by your Supervisor.
  • Follow federal and state laws, as well as company policies.

Accountability

  • Annual effectiveness assessment by Facilities Supervisor I, II, or III in coordination with school administration and Area Director.
  • Must carry a hand-held radio while on school property if assigned by Supervisor.
  • Must remain on school property from the start to the end of the workday, including lunch.
  • Assigned a 30-minute lunch break, with timing adjusted to meet school needs.
  • Required to report and assist with all emergency situations as needed.
  • No off-campus errands (personal or school-related) without permission from the Facilities Supervisor.

Requirements

  • Minimum high school diploma with continuing education in construction or facilities-related fields.
  • Minimum of 3 years of janitorial trade experience.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Knowledge of basic janitorial trades, including effective communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to understand proper mixing and use of custodial supplies and chemicals.
  • Proficiency in low-level mathematical functions and calculations.
  • Familiarity with OSHA, state and local building/fire codes, and inspection processes.
  • Strong time management, organizational skills, and the ability to prioritize effectively.
  • Computer knowledge, including experience with Microsoft Office and time/material tracking programs.
  • Ability to meet the physical requirements of the position.

Work Environment

While performing the responsibilities of this position, you may encounter usual office working conditions.

Physical Demands

  • Must be able to climb ladders and carry items up to 50 pounds frequently and up to 75 pounds occasionally.
  • Continuous walking or standing required.
