About the role

The Lead Custodian is responsible for the cleanliness, safety, and general upkeep of the residence halls and oversight of one of two residential quads at The University of Akron. This position assists the custodial supervisor with the day-to-day operations such as key management, cleaning assignments, quality control inspections, and the training of new custodians. The Lead Custodian serves in the on-call rotation for after business hours custodial emergencies.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

  • Perform routine interior cleaning of the residence halls including but not limited to lobbies, halls, stairways, restrooms, offices, lounges, elevators, laundry rooms, trash rooms, corridors, and all common areas.
  • Serve as an acting supervisor in the absence of the custodial supervisor.
  • Lead, train, and support custodial staff in the execution of daily cleaning procedures, safety practices, and proper use of equipment and chemicals.
  • Assign daily tasks and monitor cleaning performance to ensure the residence halls are sanitary and well-maintained.
  • Maintain inventory of custodial supplies and equipment, prepare custodial orders, receive deliveries, restock supplies, and inspect custodial closets.
  • Assist in the scheduling of coverage for special events, inclement weather, and emergency cleanups.
  • Coordinate the scheduling of room turns in conjunction with the custodial supervisor.
  • Report maintenance concerns and work orders to the appropriate manager for resolution.
  • Monitor snow accumulation to prevent ice buildup, shoveling snow and spreading salt on walkways.
  • Prepare and set up furniture and equipment for meetings, relocate room furniture, and construct bed lofts as requested.
  • Participate in a 24-hour emergency custodian on-call schedule on a rotating basis and respond on-site within 30 minutes for emergency calls.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • A high school diploma or general education degree (GED) is required.
  • 1-2 years of experience in working within a janitorial and or custodial position which required general cleaning skills.
  • Prior supervision experience.
  • Must have troubleshooting and communication skills. Demonstrate proficiency in verbal communication.
  • Must be a team player, we all must work together as we strive to provide the best service possible for our customers.
  • Must have personal initiative when seeing a need for cleaning within the community.
  • Must be punctual, organized, and able to meet deadlines.
  • Ability to serve on-call rotation.
  • Ability to move and lift up to 50 lbs.
