Lead Custodian

Under the direction of the principal or assigned administrator, performs custodial, grounds cleanup, and light maintenance tasks for a high school campus, including classrooms, multi-purpose rooms, offices, and related facilities. Serves as a senior or lead during evening or night shifts and for special projects, providing guidance to other custodial staff.

Responsibilities

• Cleans, dusts, and disinfects restrooms, including floors, stalls, toilets, urinals, and fixtures.
• Removes trash and waste, cleans trash receptacles, and replaces liners.
• Replenishes soap, towel, and toilet paper dispensers.
• Cleans public entry and use areas such as hallways, stairways, and meeting rooms.
• Cleans and disinfects drinking fountains, door handles, and door push plates.
• Sweeps, mops, and spot-cleans hard floors and baseboards; vacuums and spot-cleans carpeted areas.
• Performs regularly scheduled cleaning of classrooms, laboratories, and office areas, including furniture, fixtures, and boards.
• Maintains safe and clean walkways and grounds, picking up litter and emptying outdoor trash.
• Rearranges, moves, and sets up furniture and equipment according to instructions and seating arrangements.
• Participates in assembling furniture, disposing of packaging materials, and setting up/taking down seating and equipment for events (e.g., theater, athletic fields, gymnasium).
• Sets up special equipment such as barriers, benches, bleachers, floor mats, and other event-related items.
• Coordinates, leads, and participates in major cleaning projects, including carpet cleaning and floor stripping/refinishing.
• Inspects the work of other custodians, provides orientation on work methods, equipment operation, and time-saving techniques.
• Secures internal and external entry/exit doors, ensuring windows and lights are locked and off.
• Completes work order requests for maintenance services and may verify time sheets for other custodians.
• Documents work activities and unanticipated occurrences.
• Checks and records the functionality of emergency eye wash/shower stations, fire extinguishers, and emergency telephones.
• Inspects equipment for proper function, performs minor repairs, and arranges for complex repairs.
• Performs routine maintenance tasks, such as minor plumbing adjustments, oiling door hinges, tightening fixtures, and repairing electrical cords or dispensers.
• Maintains a safe working environment, addressing safety hazards and ensuring proper labeling of secondary containers for cleaning products.
• Ensures Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) for assigned areas are up to date.
• Orders supplies and replacement components as needed.
• Performs other duties as assigned to support the objectives of the position.

Requirements

• Thorough knowledge of custodial methods, materials, tools, and equipment, as well as routine facilities maintenance.
• Thorough knowledge of the buildings and grounds of the assigned site.
• Basic knowledge of work hazards, safety techniques, lifting procedures, and handling of materials, including waste and bloodborne pathogens.
• Basic knowledge of chemical reactions and proper safety precautions for cleaning products.
• Basic knowledge of fixture, plumbing, and electrical repairs.
• Sufficient reading and writing ability to follow work instructions and document activities on standardized forms.
• Basic computer skills.
• Strong human relations skills to lead custodial staff and interact courteously with others.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Three years of prior custodial experience, including two years within the district.
• Valid driver’s license.
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively, follow oral and written directions, and apply district policies and procedures.
• Ability to respond to emergencies and perform all essential duties with limited supervision.

Skills

• Operate and maintain custodial tools and equipment.
• Perform routine maintenance tasks and determine when to escalate complex issues.
• Train and guide other custodians.
• Work effectively both indoors and outdoors in an active environment.

Physical Abilities

• Near visual acuity for reading directions, labels, and observing work in progress.
• Sufficient hearing and speech for communication, including equipment sound prompts.
• Manual and finger dexterity for writing, cleaning, and minor repairs.
• Ability to lift (up to 50 lbs.), carry (up to 75 lbs.), push, pull, bend, squat, reach, and twist to perform cleaning and maintenance tasks.
• Stand and walk for extended periods.

Working Conditions

Work is performed indoors and outdoors, with exposure to health and safety considerations from physical labor and handling of materials, including waste and bloodborne pathogens.

Generally assigned to evening work shifts, with potential for advancement to higher leadership or skilled maintenance positions based on openings and qualifications.
