About the Role
Under the guidance and leadership of the Director of Facilities and Maintenance, as well as the Custodial and General Maintenance Supervisor, the Lead Custodian provides support and work quality reporting to ensure that City Schools of Decatur facilities are clean, safe, and comfortable learning environments for staff and students. The annual period of service is 244 days.
Responsibilities
- Assists with the procurement and distribution of custodial products and supplies including effective delivery, inventory control, and cost control
- Demonstrates on-the-job best practices for all custodial staff; provides training as directed
- Effectively communicates with Custodial and General Maintenance Supervisor to identify custodial needs or coordinate special school-based custodial projects as needed
- Performs light maintenance operations as required
- Ensures functionality and workability of all custodial equipment
- Performs custodial duties as required; may occasionally backfill custodians in times of high absenteeism
- Coordinates with manager to ensure requisition and assignment of substitute custodial staff
- Moves furniture and equipment as necessary
- Sets up and tears down for special events
- Reports items in need of repair
- Secures buildings as needed or directed by manager when custodian is absent in a school
- Performs minor maintenance on equipment (e.g., changes vacuum cleaner belts, pads on buffer)
- Participates in training programs to increase skills and proficiency related to job assignment
- Identifies and reports repair needs and safety discrepancies to Custodial and General Maintenance Supervisor/Manager
- Reports repairs made and materials used to supervisor
- Maintains a high degree of punctuality and attendance
- Maintains a clean and neat personal appearance
- Ensures adherence to good safety procedures
- Operates school Board-owned vehicle in a safe manner and assumes responsibility for vehicle and all supplies and equipment on the vehicle
- Performs other related duties as assigned to ensure a clean, safe work environment
Requirements
- High school diploma or general education degree (GED)
- 3 years of relative work experience
- 1 year of experience in a related lead role
Preferred Qualifications
- Associate’s Degree or 2 years of college-level courses
- 5 years of relative work experience
- 3 years of experience in a lead role
- Certification and documented training in custodial services and equipment care
Skills
- Ability to carry out instructions furnished in written or oral form
- Ability to read, write, and speak English fluently
- Ability to describe cleaning, maintenance, or repair problems orally or in writing
- Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with students, staff, and others
- Basic arithmetic skills (add, subtract, multiply, divide)
- Ability to read labels on containers and materials used in the course of work
- Ability to work with a diverse group of individuals
- Ability to process paperwork accurately according to standardized procedures
- Knowledge of how to use equipment and train others in its use
- Organizational and time management skills
Physical Demands
- Required to stand, walk, sit, or hear
- Lifting up to 50 pounds may be required on an occasional basis
- Team lifts in excess of 100 pounds may be required on an occasional basis
- Occasionally required to stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl
- Specific vision abilities required include close vision and distance vision
- Works in standard office and school building environments
- Ability to work outdoors in inclement weather conditions
- Exposure to cleaning chemicals, solvents, contaminated trash, grasses, pollens, etc.

- Hand tools of trade and related power equipment (brooms, mops, floor cleaning and waxing machines, vacuum cleaners, snow blowers, shovels, power mowers, and hand tools)
- Personal computer
Schedule
Standard schedule with overtime as needed. The annual period of service is 244 days.
