Exemplary Duties/Responsibilities
- Acts as responsible person on assigned shift; supervises, plans, assigns, directs, and oversees the work of assigned custodians; assumes responsibility for security of the buildings and grounds; insures work assignments are complete; provides assistance, instructs workers as necessary; assigns tasks and evaluates substitute custodians while on site; assists in training new staff; confers with Site Facilities Coordinator regarding care and cleaning problems and needs; responds to off-hour site emergencies (i.e. burglaries, vandalism, fires, equipment failures, or alarm activity) as needed.
- Receives and distributes supplies; assists in submitting work orders for repairs and requests; familiarity with computer systems and software; assists in maintaining site safety awareness documents, and SDS sheets/labels; assists in submitting purchase orders and inventory supply orders; assists in maintaining boiler and maintenance logs daily; assists in maintaining site documents on staff appraisals, and disciplinary actions; assists with site safety awareness staff programs and training; and assists with maintaining payroll and personnel records of custodial staff on site daily.
- Oversees after school use of buildings and grounds; assists in inspecting buildings daily for safety, and vandalism issues; identifies and reports health safety concerns (i.e. asbestos, indoor air quality, mold, oil/gas leaks) to the Site Facility Coordinator in a timely manner; opens areas for special events; directs shift personnel in setting up equipment; enforces school rules as pertains to after school hours functions, i.e., city basketball league, meetings, etc.
- Implements and manages district standards for cleanliness on site; cleans and services assigned buildings and related areas; sweeps, mops, scrubs, shampoos, and waxes floors and other surfaces; vacuums and cleans rugs and carpets; dusts, waxes, washes, and polishes furniture and woodwork, fixtures, shelves, cupboards and counters; cleans walls and blackboards; cleans and sanitizes restrooms, locker rooms and showers; washes windows; and empties trash and waste cans.
- Performs minor maintenance such as replacing lights, switches, outlets, unplugging fixtures; paints rooms including boiler room, wall piping touch up areas, trim, and floors; repairs broken furniture, preventative maintenance, and custodial equipment; assists in cleaning and preventative maintenance of heating/air conditioning units; assists in repair of electrical equipment and systems; assists in ordering supplies and inventories; reports vandalism and items needing repair to Site Facilities Coordinator.
- Assists in outside maintenance such as removing snow, cutting weeds, mowing, picking up litter and watering; repairs sprinklers; washes and paints exterior surfaces; plants, prunes and applies pesticides and fertilizers to plants and shrubbery's; and inspects facility/grounds daily for cosmetic, and maintenance issues.
Employment Standards
- Education/Experience: Any combination equivalent to education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and skills is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and skills would be: - A high school diploma is desirable or equivalent education that would demonstrate the ability to perform the duties of the class; AND - One (l) to two (2) years of responsible experience in custodial work or an equivalent combination of maintenance training and experience.
- Knowledge of: Reading, writing and basic arithmetic sufficient to perform job duties successfully; cleaning materials, supplies, operations and methods of extractors, scrubbers, pressure washers, wet/dry vacuums, buffers, burnishers, forklifts scissors/boom lifts, mowers, blowers and other methods and equipment used in custodial work; operation of tractors, gators, trucks, back hoes, plows, sanders, dump beds and other mechanical grounds equipment; general safety practices; basic emergency; first aid techniques; and supervisory practices and techniques.
- Skill at: Understanding and carrying out verbal and written instructions; training, coordinating, and overseeing custodial personnel; preparing and maintaining personnel and administrative records and reports; operating, maintaining and repairing all cleaning and custodial equipment; performing building and grounds maintenance; performing minor repair work on furniture, boiler operations and electrical and plumbing systems; working effectively without supervision; working under occasional adverse environmental situations such as heat, cold, dust and fumes; working effectively under time limitations; performing strenuous physical work; climbing and working from ladders; making simple arithmetic calculations; developing working relationships with those contacted in course of work.
