Lead Custodian

About the role

Join the Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) as a Lead Custodian at the Austin State Supported Living Center. You will perform highly complex custodial work, cleaning and sanitizing resident homes, bedrooms, office spaces, medical and activity areas, and support the Custodial Manager in overseeing general custodial functions.

Responsibilities

• Perform senior‑level cleaning and sanitizing tasks throughout the facility, including living areas, resident rooms, offices, medical activity areas, corridors, and restrooms.
• Use appropriate cleaning agents and techniques to eliminate pathogens and maintain a sterile environment.
• Handle biohazardous materials, disinfect medical equipment, and clean sensitive areas.
• Conduct regular inspections of buildings and cleaning equipment to ensure cleanliness and safety standards are met.
• Manage inventory of cleaning supplies and equipment: track stock levels, reorder, receive and inspect incoming items, and maintain accurate records.
• Maintain and repair custodial equipment; implement preventive maintenance programs for both the facility and equipment.
• Act as lead custodian, providing backup support to other custodians and covering for the Custodial Manager when absent.
• Assist the Custodial Manager with task assignment, schedule creation, and staff training.
• Record custodial activities, cleaning schedules, maintenance tasks, and any incidents or issues.
• Analyze custodial operations for efficiency improvements, evaluate resource allocation, and recommend workflow changes.
• Participate in disaster response, continuity of operations (COOP) activation, and may work alternate shift patterns as needed.
• Perform other duties as assigned, including overtime, extended hours, weekends, and holidays.

Requirements

• Knowledge of cleaning methods, sanitation regulations, infection control principles, and inventory control.
• Skill in using custodial equipment, handling chemicals safely, and maintaining building maintenance tools.
• Ability to track inventory and usage data, stay on task, follow written and oral instructions, and lift up to 45 pounds.
• Ability to stand/walk on hard floors for extended periods and work irregular hours.
• Valid Texas driver’s license (or obtain within 90 days of hire) and an eligible driving record per HHSC Fleet Management policy.
• High school diploma or equivalent (preferred).
• At least one (1) year of paid custodial/housekeeping experience (required).
• One (1) year of experience working with individuals who have intellectual and developmental disabilities and/or mental health disorders (preferred).
• Pass a fingerprint criminal background check, pre‑employment drug screen, and required registry checks (CANRS, Nurse Aide, Medication Aide, LEIE, etc.).
• Males ages 18‑25 must be registered with the Selective Service.
• All applicants must be at least 18 years of age.
• Ability to work weekends, holidays, and overtime as needed.

Pay

Salary range: $3,170.92 – $4,149.83 per month (pay frequency: monthly). Salary Group: TEXAS‑A‑12. Position is non‑exempt.

Schedule

• Shift: Day (additional shift may be required).
• Regular full‑time position; overtime and extended hours may be required.
• Travel: Up to 5 %.
• Telework: Not eligible for telework.
• May be placed on an on‑call rotating schedule to meet operational needs.
