About the Role
Lead, oversee, and participate in the complex and difficult work of staff responsible for cleaning and maintaining City buildings. This position involves ordering and receiving janitorial supplies and equipment, as well as performing a variety of technical tasks related to assigned areas.
Responsibilities
- Lead, plan, train, and review the work of staff responsible for cleaning and maintaining City buildings.
- Plan, direct, and participate in all custodial activities, including:
- Stripping, refinishing, washing, wet and dry mopping, and sweeping floors.
- Washing windows, walls, ash cans, and doors.
- Arranging furniture and replacing burned-out light bulbs.
- Clean restrooms, including scouring and cleaning porcelain fixtures with cleaning powder and disinfectant, and replenishing tissue, towels, and soap.
- Assist with setup and breakdown of rooms, sites, and special events.
- Train assigned employees in the use of buffers, scrubbers, hand tools, and chemical cleaning agents.
- Collect and empty ash trays, ash cans, trash cans, and waste baskets; remove trash from offices and public areas.
- Estimate time, materials, and equipment required for assigned jobs; requisition materials and solicit bids for custodial equipment and replacement fixtures.
- Verify the work of assigned employees for accuracy, proper work methods, techniques, and compliance with standards.
- Provide technical assistance and on-the-job instruction to ensure compliance with custodial standards.
- Identify and report building problems to higher-level supervisory or management staff for corrective action.
- During inclement weather, remove snow from walkways and entrance areas; spread ice-melting compounds as necessary.
- Ensure adherence to safe work practices and procedures.
- Respond to public inquiries courteously, provide information, and resolve complaints efficiently.
- Perform exterior cleaning around City buildings or facility grounds, such as:
- Emptying trash receptacles.
- Using a leaf blower or power washer.
- Removing weeds and debris.
- Perform related duties as required.
Requirements
- High school diploma or GED; or one (1) year of custodial experience.
- Possession of a valid New Mexico Driver’s License or the ability to obtain one by the date of hire.
- Possession of a valid City Operator’s Permit (COP) within 6 months from the date of hire.
Additional Requirements (When Assigned to Aviation)
- Possession of a valid New Mexico Driver’s License or the ability to obtain one by the date of hire.
- Possession of a valid City Operator’s Permit (COP) within 6 months from the date of hire.
- Ability to successfully qualify for and maintain a Sunport Access Control Card as determined by the policies and guidelines of the Aviation Department and the Transportation Security Administration (TSA).
- Successful completion of a security background check conducted by U.S. Customs & Border Protection, if applicable.
