About the Role
Under the direction of the Camp Program Director/Site Director, the Lead Camp Counselor will oversee camp participants' activities, schedules, and overall wellbeing. This role supports and guides Camp Counselors, leads active participation within the group throughout the day, and takes the lead on behavior management, parent communication, and implementation of scheduled activities or lessons.
Responsibilities
- Staff Development
- Develop and maintain personal relationships that inspire trust and support positive staff connection to the program, branch, and mission of the YMCA.
- Hold staff and volunteers accountable for following program procedures and policies.
- Assist and guide staff to support positive behavior management and staff-child relationships.
- Work individually and as a team to develop staff members, providing ongoing feedback and coaching, and maintaining documentation of both successes and areas for improvement.
- Provide feedback to the direct supervisor for end-of-season reviews.
- Report any issues or concerns immediately to the direct supervisor.
- Program Operations
- Effectively communicate the mission, vision, and values of the Wichita YMCA.
- Supervise and implement quality activity plans according to standards set by KDHE and YMCA.
- Provide information for the camp activity calendar and content for camp social media.
- Be actively engaged in program activities throughout the session to build relationships with youth and serve as a role model for staff.
- Guide behavior management issues to support camp counselors and youth.
- Maintain behavior documentation and communicate challenges to the direct supervisor when issues impact the safety of the group or begin to escalate.
- Maintain accurate roster and ratio at all times.
- Supervise proper organization, maintenance, and inventory of equipment and supplies in program areas.
- Review all emergency and/or medical plans and special needs plans for youth in groups; ensure accommodations and conditions are communicated to the team and adjust the program to ensure the safety of all youth; follow up with the direct supervisor.
- Apply program policies and procedures respectfully when responding to staff, parent, and participant situations, concerns, or challenges.
- Respond quickly and effectively to accidents and incidents while following YMCA and KDHE reporting policies and submitting all required documentation in a timely manner.
- Provide supply requests to the direct supervisor in a timely manner.
- Perform all other duties as assigned.
