About the role

The Department of Criminal Justice Training (DOCJT) located in Richmond, Kentucky is currently seeking an Attorney to provide legal instruction to Law Enforcement Officers throughout the Commonwealth of Kentucky. This position offers the opportunity to develop and instruct course units offered for state law enforcement agencies involving complex legal issues of criminal and civil law that are unique, technical and, or, controversial in nature which require original legal research and analysis. Significant portions of these topic areas involve classroom and virtual training options.

Responsibilities

  • Researches, designs, develops, and independently conducts legal training classes to law enforcement and justice areas.
  • Applies adult learning principles and training techniques including, but not limited to: due process, use of force, search and seizure, probable cause, affidavits for search and arrest warrants, arrest, evidence, handling and documentation, criminal law and offenses, escape, constitutional law, subpoena, domestic violence law, juvenile law, testimony preparation, missing persons, mental illness, traffic law, driving under the influence, controlled substance law, administrative law, police discipline, legal liability, other matters that are considered civil in nature.
  • Consults with agency leaders to assess and diagnose legal training needs and requirements.
  • Researches, designs, develops, and updates legal training courses and DOCJT's legal publication website based on training needs analysis and identified competencies.
  • Evaluates the design and content of legal training courses to ensure the integration of competency-based learning into the training curriculum.
  • Stays current on judicial opinions and statutory changes that impact law enforcement.
  • Researches case law and statutes for revision of the law.
  • Compiles and edits publications produced by the legal training section.
  • Responsible for meeting accreditation standards.
  • Coordinates the scheduling of legal courses, selection of class locations, and assignments of instructors to a wide variety of legal courses offered at DOCJT as well as throughout the state.
  • Attends meetings and serves on committees.
  • May act as supervisor in the supervisor absence.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Must have three years' experience as a licensed attorney in the practice of law. A Master of Laws degree (LL.M.) will substitute for one year of the required experience.
  • Must be admitted to practice law and in good standing in the Commonwealth of Kentucky or comply with SCR 2.111 (limited certification of admission to practice) or SCR 2.117 (practice pending admission).
  • Must maintain any required licensure(s), certification(s), or other credentials for the length of employment in this job classification.
