About the role
The Vermont Criminal Justice Council (VCJC) seeks a dedicated and experienced Law Enforcement Canine Instructor to lead and manage certified law enforcement K9 training programs across Vermont.
Responsibilities
- Deliver, oversee, and evaluate comprehensive canine training for law enforcement K9 teams, including patrol, tracking and trailing, detection, and search and rescue disciplines.
- Manage and train law enforcement K9 teams in various disciplines.
- Evaluate and improve training methods based on feedback and performance metrics.
- Ensure compliance with state and federal laws and regulations regarding K9 training and handling.
- Develop and maintain training materials and resources for K9 handlers and trainers.
- Collaborate with other law enforcement agencies and organizations to enhance K9 training programs.
- Provide ongoing support and guidance to K9 handlers and trainers.
Requirements
- Three (3) or more years of experience as a police canine handler.
- Completion of an Instructor Development Course and eligibility for VCJC Canine Instructor certification.
- Supervisory experience and background working with law enforcement or military K9 units.
- Strong knowledge of dog behavior and training techniques.
- Familiarity with Vermont law and mandated policy standards.
Qualifications
- Degree, training, or equivalent experience in animal behavior.
- Pass a background investigation applicable to the position.

- Comfortable working in diverse environmental conditions.
- Passionate about K9 behavior and training methodologies.
