Responsibilities
- Evaluate student progress and mentor Handlers in all areas of academic progress
- Prepare Handler tests and evaluations to measure Handler progress and reinforce core tenants of search patterns, tactics, techniques and procedures (TTP’s) to ensure Handler properly deploys canine to maximize odor detection of static and mobile odor targets
- Develop and conduct certifications as required for NDC, EDC and ETDC
- Develop and implement remedial training programs tailored to individual Canine Handlers and/or canine EDC or NDC
- Document training using company and/or client canine training system to include the following; weekly training, monthly summary, remedial training plans, upload video recordings of training sessions, and include details on training location(s), EDC/NDC training aids used, lessons learned, and comments regarding Handler and canine performance
- Train and manage multiple canines through the training process, from initial training through certification and continual training of teams during deployments to facilitate continuous improvement of canine and Handler capabilities
- Arrange operational exercises in order to replicate real life scenarios and enable canines to work independently in high population density environments with people moving to and from mass transit environments
- Properly utilize and maintain canine training equipment to include safety equipment for canines and Trainers
- Maintain the cleanliness of training areas, company vehicles, canine trailers, resources, and facilities to reduce and/or eliminate cross contamination of explosive or narcotic training aids
- Secure and account for canine training aids, equipment, company vehicles, canine trailers, company assets, and resources
- Auxiliary duties may include assisting when needed in instruction of new Handlers and Trainers, which may include Handler duties, which will include maintaining a canine team certification and prepared for deployments to contract locations if required
Qualifications
- Minimum of two years of experience training canines in body born explosive detection, or Explosive Trailing Detection (ETD) methodologies
- Canine certifications preferred, but not required, that depict previous areas of expertise with canine training, or a Canine Handler (detection) course with a certificate of completion from a credible, recognized canine detection course
- Demonstrated experience in solving unique training problems with detection dogs and knowledgeable of how to evaluate and apply canine training principles, conditioning and standards
- Must have and maintain a valid US drivers license and satisfactory driver record
- Effective oral and written communication skills
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage time and multiple priorities to completion
- Problem solving skills with an analytical thought process
- Ability to adapt to a rapidly changing environment
- Must be able to lift and carry awkward items weighing up to 100 lbs
- Requires standing for long periods of time in all weather conditions
- Requires intermittent sitting, walking, running, climbing, squatting, stretching, bending, and kneeling
- Requires constant use of hands and fingers to feel, handle or operate objects, tools, or controls, and reach with hands and arms
