About the role
An individual in this role is responsible for performing fire suppression, emergency medical care, hazardous materials mitigation, technical-rescue incident mitigation, training, and fire prevention activities. Regular attendance is necessary and essential to meeting the expectations of the job functions.
Essential Job Functions
- Perform essential individual and team-based firefighting skills due to limited personnel.
- Demonstrate competency in all listed BFD Probationary Firefighter Skills within 12 months.
- Within 60 days, perform as a primary care attendant on medical calls consistent with Burlington Fire Department training and VT EMS protocols, including providing verbal and written patient care reports and collaborating with co-workers.
- Within 90 days, quickly learn department and city policies and procedures, meeting performance and conduct expectations with minimal intervention.
- By the end of the 12-month probationary period, demonstrate proper use and maintenance of fire department tools and equipment.
- Within the first 12 months, learn to drive and operate fire department apparatus as taught in the BFD Fire Academy, with minimal assistance required, including maintaining knowledge of city layout and streets.
- Proactively address problems at emergency incidents and around fire stations, working with team members to implement immediate solutions under resource constraints and time pressure.
- Complete physically demanding tasks under limited resources and often when sleep-deprived or physically exhausted.
- By the end of 24 months, obtain AEMT licensure.
Qualifications
- Ability to actively support City diversity, equity, and cultural competency efforts within stated job responsibilities and work effectively across diverse cultures and constituencies.
- Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion as evidenced by ongoing trainings and professional development.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Valid driver’s license.
- EMT Certification (NREMT or VT EMT).
- Firefighter 1 Certification (including training records).
- Minimum 1 year experience as a full-time career firefighter.
- Valid CPAT certification obtained no more than 12 months prior to time of application. CPAT due by 12/31/2026.
Pay
$67,556.00 – $93,554.00 Annually
