About the role
This position performs fire suppression, emergency medical care, hazardous materials mitigation, technical-rescue incident mitigation, training, and fire prevention activities. As a lateral transfer, firefighters must demonstrate competency in essential skills following a condensed fire academy.
Essential Job Functions
- Perform essential individual and team-based firefighting skills due to limited personnel.
- Within 60 days, act as primary care attendant on medical calls in accordance with VT EMS protocols, provide verbal and written patient care reports, and collaborate with coworkers to deliver appropriate patient care.
- Within 90 days, learn department and city policies and procedures, meeting performance and conduct expectations with minimal intervention.
- By the end of the 12-month probationary period, demonstrate proper use and maintenance of fire department tools and equipment.
- Within 12 months, learn to drive and operate fire department apparatus, including maintaining knowledge of city layout and streets, and driving apparatus to incidents with minimal direction.
- Proactively address problems at emergency incidents and around fire stations, working with team members to implement immediate solutions under resource constraints and time pressure.
- Complete physically demanding tasks under limited resources, often while sleep-deprived or exhausted, maintaining professionalism.
- By the end of 24 months, obtain AEMT licensure.
Qualifications
- Ability to actively support City diversity, equity, and cultural competency efforts within job responsibilities and work effectively across diverse cultures and constituencies.
- Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion as evidenced by ongoing trainings and professional development.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Valid driver’s license.
- EMT Certification (NREMT or VT EMT).
- Firefighter 1 Certification (including training records).
- Minimum 1 year experience as a full-time career firefighter.
- Valid CPAT certification obtained no more than 12 months prior to time of application. CPAT due by 12/31/2026.
Pay
$67,556.00 – $93,554.00 annually.
