Latent Print Examiner

About the role

Are you an experienced latent print examiner looking for a new opportunity to work in a fast-paced, high-throughput environment that presents daily challenges to fully utilize your latent print examination experience and multitasking ability? This position supports the Department of Defense (DoD) Warfighter by applying unique technical skills in a 100% digital environment. Latent Print Examiners work both independently and as a team to handle individual requests and routine casework, playing a critical role in searching latent prints through DoD ABIS and performing complex examinations on fragmented friction ridge detail impressions.

The role also includes training to perform facial and iris examinations to support biometric operations as needed. Examiners will work on the front lines, performing latent print examinations, comparisons, and identifications to serve the DoD Warfighter and protect the United States.

Responsibilities

• Examine processed latent fingerprints and evaluate their quality for entry into the DoD Enterprise ABIS and other Automated Fingerprint Identification Systems (AFIS).
• Prepare latent prints for entry into ABIS/NGI using digital imaging techniques to enhance and maintain image integrity.
• Employ encoding strategies to prepare latent print search files for automated searches.
• Manually compare latent prints with candidate prints from ABIS/NGI to eliminate individuals or effect positive identifications.
• Utilize a case management/database portal system to document case notes, metrics, and prepare reports for submitting customers.
• Monitor queue applications to resolve Unsolved Latent Matches (ULMs).
• Maintain digital Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and Work Instructions (WIs).
• Provide tenprint, facial, and iris examination support as necessary to the ESS Biometric Examiner operation.
• Verify all latent print identifications.

Requirements

• Education and Experience:
  • Doctorate, Master’s, or Bachelor’s degree and 6 years of related work experience, OR
  • Associate degree and 8 years of related work experience, OR
  • High School diploma and 10 years of related work experience.
• Must be trained to competency as a latent print examiner.
• Possess AFIS experience.
• Intermediate-level competency in Adobe Photoshop and Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, and Outlook).
• Must successfully pass proficiency testing prior to and periodically during employment.
• Current certification by the International Association for Identification (IAI) (must be obtained within 1 year of eligibility).
• Willingness to work shifts (10-12 hours) on a 24/7, 365-day schedule, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
• Must be willing to relocate or commute to Clarksburg, WV.
• U.S. Citizenship is required.
• Ability to obtain and maintain Interim U.S. Secret clearance and U.S. Secret clearance.

Desired Qualifications

• Current certification by the International Association for Identification (IAI).
• Experience using Universal Latent Workstation (ULW).

• Ability to hone skills in Microsoft Office Suite, Windows, Adobe Photoshop, and FBI ULW for formatting and encoding latent print images.

Physical Requirements

• Meet the physical demands of working in a general office environment, including long hours at a computer (sitting or standing).

Schedule

• Shift-based role (10-12 hours) on a 24/7, 365-day schedule, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
• Primarily set shifts (no rotation). Shift options:
  • Day: 5 AM–3 PM, 7 AM–5 PM, 5 AM–5 PM
  • Evening: 5 PM–5 AM, 5 PM–3 AM, 7 PM–5 AM
• Option to work either 10 or 12-hour days indefinitely, depending on coverage requirements.
• Condensed work schedule commuter option available after training period.
• No shift differential available.
