About the Role

The International Center for Academic and Professional English (ICAPE) at Lehigh University seeks a Language Specialist to join a dynamic team committed to excellence in language and pragmatic instruction. This role supports Lehigh's graduate and undergraduate students through advanced-level credit courses, the pre-matriculation StepUp intensive English program, the TA program, and year-round tutoring and workshops in the English Language Lab.

Responsibilities

  • Curriculum and Instruction
    • Teach a minimum of three courses per 16-week semester (or equivalent instructional units), including credit/non-credit courses, seminars, workshops, and scheduled English Language Lab sessions.
    • Submit student grades, evaluations, and assessments by stated deadlines.
    • Participate in ICAPE program activities: curriculum development, meetings, textbook selection, portfolio evaluations, course assessments, orientations, graduations, committee work, and performance reviews.
    • Assist in creating, designing, and implementing new or revised ICAPE courses and programs to meet evolving student and institutional needs.
  • Assessment
    • Assess English language proficiency of students.
    • Administer, rate, report, develop, pilot, and maintain English proficiency assessments.
    • Serve as an ICAPE evaluator for teaching assistant English fluency exams.
    • Assist in creating, piloting, and implementing new English fluency assessments.
    • Revise current English language assessments, including the Test of Pedagogical Speaking Skills (TOPSS) design, descriptors, and testing protocol.
  • Administrative
    • Hold a minimum of two drop-in office hours per week during the semester.
    • Advise students and assist with student file preparation and maintenance.
    • Support ICAPE program tasks and activities.
  • Professional Development
    • Stay updated on current TESOL research, best practices, technology, and trends.
    • Serve on ICAPE and/or university committees and participate in initiatives, events, training, and other activities.

Requirements

  • Master’s Degree in TESOL, Linguistics, Education, or a directly related field.
  • At least three years of work experience as a Language Specialist or in a closely related position.

Pay

Approximate salary range: $56,030–$68,190 (Grade 9 - 40), subject to change based on experience, skills, and qualifications.

Special Considerations

  • Partial remote work may be permitted at the supervisor’s discretion.
  • Successful completion of standard background checks, including social security verification, education verification, national criminal background checks, motor vehicle checks, PATCH, FBI fingerprinting, Child Abuse Clearance, and credit history (as required).
