Depending upon the desired qualifications of the successful applicant, the hiring manager may elect to fill this position at a higher level within the job hierarchy. The preferred location is Cincinnati, OH; however, this position will cover Cincinnati and Kentucky and can be located at any Duke Energy location that serves this region. The exact location will be determined at the time of offer based on business needs.

About the role

This position is responsible for managing survey vendor contracts to provide quality land surveying services in a safe and cost-effective manner. Responsibilities include developing project scope, calculating in-house estimates, generating requests for quotes, initiating data entry into the work management tool, monitoring contractors and projects to ensure quality, schedules, and budgets are met, processing invoices, reviewing deliverables for compliance, and closing out projects.

This individual should have a broad understanding of land survey concepts and utilize regional professional service providers to meet customer demands. They will also act as a problem solver for customers and employees, applying new technology to increase quality and manage project costs while supporting company goals, policies, and procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Leadership, Survey Vendor Oversight:
    • Safely oversees contractor staff and outside consultants responsible for surveys, including transmission lines, distribution lines, gas lines, dam deformations, construction staking, land acquisitions, and disposals of enterprise assets for a designated region.
    • Provides leadership to contracted survey crews by setting an example for professionalism, customer service, and honest communications.
    • Promotes good teammate relations and participates in resolving team problems and concerns; recommends employee training and development.
    • Integrates internal resources and external contractors into a seamless service.
  • Project Management:
    • Serves as a representative of Land Services to monitor, inspect, and review survey work performed by contractors for compliance with Duke Energy technical specifications, work schedules, and budgets; recommends approval of deliverables.
    • Directs multiple survey vendors, solves complex problems involving conflicting data, and ensures the quality of deliverables.
    • Maintains and provides management with regular progress reports on survey projects, noting contractor performance and suggesting corrective actions where required.
    • Thoroughly inspects and checks deliverables (field work, maps, and electronic files) for accuracy and correctness.
    • Attends project meetings and obtains detailed cost estimates and agreed-upon delivery due dates from vendors.
    • Monitors contractors to ensure compliance with Master Service Agreements and project control requirements.
    • Reviews vendor invoices, recommends payment based on performance, and advises management of anticipated cost overruns.
    • Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with internal and external personnel/groups.
    • Mediates and coordinates the resolution of problems between company departments in the acquisition and disposition of real estate.
    • Works with and maintains relationships with vendors and governmental agencies to acquire or resolve problems.
  • Professional Leadership and Development:
    • Demonstrates sound judgment and creativity in resolving engineering/technical analysis problems; determines and corrects root causes.
    • Ensures observance of safety and environmental compliance with internal staff and contract survey vendors; ensures vendors have necessary training.
    • Participates in professional organizations and associations (e.g., State Society of Surveyors, IRWA).
    • Stays abreast of all laws and governmental regulations affecting land surveying.

Requirements

  • Land Surveying Coordinator:
    • Associate's degree in Surveying and Topography or related field and 2+ years of related work experience, or
    • High School/GED and 4+ years of related work experience.
  • Senior Land Surveying Coordinator:
    • Associate's degree in Surveying and Topography or related field and 5+ years of related work experience, or
    • High School/GED and 7+ years of related work experience.

Qualifications

  • Professional Land Surveyor certification.
  • Ability to coordinate and direct all phases of a contract and strong project management skills.
  • Excellent organization and documentation skills.
  • Proven ability to read construction plans.
  • Able to work independently to check deliverables; performs complex computations using standard surveying software.
  • Critical thinking and decision-making skills to avoid and overcome obstacles on difficult assignments.
  • Extensive knowledge of professional surveying practices and procedures.
  • Ability to understand and develop scope of work.
  • Knowledge of laws and regulations affecting land surveying.
  • Demonstrated ability to work as part of a large team consisting of professional and technical staff.
  • Project management background.
  • Familiarity with high voltage transmission route surveys.
  • Good understanding of Duke’s real estate and rights-of-way.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral.
  • 4+ years of progressive land surveying management experience.

Working Conditions

  • Field Mobility Classification – Work will be performed in various field locations as needed after the onboarding period. Field employees are required to live within a reasonable daily commute to their assigned work location.
  • Frequent visits to contract surveying firms and field survey projects in hot and cold weather conditions.
  • Occasional travel within the region as well as other regions within the Duke Energy service area.
  • Travel Requirements: 5-15%.
