Land Survey Technician / Engineering Aide Inter

Part-time, unlimited position with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, Division of Lands and Minerals in Brainerd.

About the role

This position performs para-professional technical surveying and engineering work for the Lands and Minerals Surveying Unit, assembling detailed project information for feasibility studies, property surveys, and design development.

Responsibilities

• Ensure adequate field data is available for the Project Surveyor to complete the project.
• Prepare field notes and hand-drawn sketches to aid drafters in the development of maps.
• Organize, create, and assemble project information for feasibility studies, property surveys, and design development to ensure complete, accurate information is available for property transactions and project designs.
• Maintain supply inventory and equipment as needed.

Requirements

• One (1) year of experience with electronic surveying instruments, survey-grade GPS equipment, and survey levels, including knowledge of data collection, compilation, and review of survey data.
• Working knowledge of mathematics, trigonometry, surveying principles, and topographic mapping sufficient for preparing original topographic base mapping and geometric alignments and boundaries with minimal assistance.
• Ability to acquire various types of technical information through fieldwork, research, and communication with vendors and clients, and apply this information to survey, design, and construction work.
• Ability to write clear, concise technical descriptions of base map and proposed construction features.
• Effective communication skills to gather diverse data from various agencies and divisions.
• Unrestricted Class D Driver’s license with a clear driving record; must be at least 18 years old to operate equipment and vehicles on behalf of the agency.
• Ability to meet the physical requirements and work in the environmental conditions of the position, with or without reasonable accommodations.
• Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without sponsorship for employment visa status.
• Background check required prior to employment, including conflict of interest review, criminal history check, education verification, employment reference/records check, and license/certification verification.

Preferred Qualifications

• Two (2) years of experience with electronic surveying systems, survey-grade GPS equipment, and survey levels, including knowledge of data collection, compilation, and review of survey data.
• Ability to lead a field survey in the absence of the Survey Crew Supervisor, write clear and detailed survey notes, communicate verbally, and interact positively with private landowners and others.
• Ability to exercise independent judgment in determining the most efficient method of completing requested fieldwork or office tasks.

Pay

$23.31 - $32.94 per hour.

Schedule

• Part-time, day shift.
• Days of work: Monday and Friday.
