Lactation Consultant
About the role
Functions as a Lactation Counselor/Consultant through MHUMC Lactation Services, a hospital based breastfeeding center. Provides education to and support for the patients who choose to breastfeed; and to those patients who do not choose to breastfeed but may have questions about breast care after delivery. Provides education for the hospital staff and the community. Serves as a resource for hospital staff and physicians; and outpatient consultations on a referral basis. Complies with the Memorial Health Compliance Program, related policies and procedures and the Code of Business Practices; reports instances of perceived and actual non-compliance to Team Leader or through other reporting mechanisms.
Responsibilities
- Provides in-hospital consultation.
- Attends to 24-hour breastfeeding 'warm line' if applicable.
- Provides outpatient consultations by referral.
- Consults with hospital staff and physicians regarding lactation support.
- Maintain open lines of communication with staff and community.
- Demonstrates excellent organizational skills and problem-solving skills.
- Adheres to hospital policy and is a role model to staff regarding breastfeeding practices.
- Willingly accepts added assignments.
- Interacts with community to increase public awareness of breastfeeding.
- Supports MHUMC team members returning to work who plan to breastfeed.
- Aids senior lactation consultant in providing education to hospital staff and physicians, maintaining resource library, developing patient educational materials and outreach programs, in addition to maintaining and increasing own clinical knowledge base.
Qualifications
- Basic Cardiac Life Support must be obtained within 30 days of employment start date.
- International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC).
- Associate Degree Required.
