Job Summary

The College of Science at the University of Utah is seeking a laboratory technician for the Crocker Science Center (CSC). This position will allow the successful applicant to interact with faculty, students, and staff across the College of Science. This position will support the educational laboratory and undergraduate research courses in the CSC.

Responsibilities

  • Support educational lab courses in CSC, including management of equipment, supplies, and chemical and biological media.
  • Adhere to the highest laboratory safety standards and implement best practices.
  • Oversight of upper-level laboratory courses held in CSC. Preparation of class needs, materials, communication with professors, run support for CHEM 5710, CHEM 5730, CHEM 5750, BIO 3525.
  • Support laboratory spaces for the Science Research Initiative in the Crocker Science Center.
  • Secondary support, redundancy, for the College of Science Laboratory Internship Team.
  • This person will report to the Laboratory Manager in the College of Science and will be expected to align goals and work environments with best practices on campus.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Work Environment

Nearly Continuously: Office environment.
Often: Infectious disease, oils (there is air or skin exposure to oils or other cutting fluids), hazards (includes a variety of physical conditions, such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, moving vehicles, electrical current, working on scaffolding and high places, or exposure to chemicals).

Qualifications

  • EQUIVALENCY STATEMENT: 1 year of higher education can be substituted for 1 year of directly related work experience (Example: bachelor's degree = 4 years of directly related work experience).
  • Department may hire employee at one of the following job levels: Laboratory Technician, II: Requires at least 1 year of related experience.
  • Preferences: Bachelor's degree in Biology, Chemistry or other scientific discipline or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience); one year full-time laboratory experience; and demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills preferred.
  • Working knowledge of advanced scientific techniques and procedures as well as the ability to make statistical calculations, analyze results, prepare reports and perform specialized tests also preferred.
