Laboratory Technician
Yosemite Pathology (YP) is a private independent pathologist-owned and operated surgical pathology and cytology laboratory based in Modesto, CA. YP provides comprehensive, state-of-the-art, reliable, and accurate diagnostic services to physicians and major area hospitals in Alameda, Amador, Calaveras, Contra Costa, Kern, Mariposa, Merced, San Joaquin, Solano, Stanislaus, and Tuolumne counties. YP offers a full spectrum of tissue pathology, cytology, and histology services, including examination of gynecologic specimens, body fluids, and fine needle aspiration specimens. We also offer an extensive array of special stains and immunohistochemistry to assist in the management of oncologic and non-oncologic diseases. The laboratory is supported by highly qualified histotechnologists, cytotechnologists, technicians, and office staff who provide excellent service.
About the role
The Accessioning Laboratory Technician is responsible for the daily operations of the Accessioning department, including specimen receipt, test order processing, sample processing, material returns, and sample verifications. The Laboratory Technician works closely with various functional groups, including Histology, Cytology, Molecular, Pathology Assistants, Analytical Laboratory, and Information Technology.
Responsibilities
- Organize, sort, accession, and process patient specimens
- Responsible for data entry and verifying all documentation of specimens received
- Complete all required written documentation legibly and within assigned timeframe
- Organize work by sorting specimens, checking labeling, and logging specimens into LIS systems in a timely manner
- Troubleshoot problematic cases requiring investigation and correction
- Triage cases to Pathologist Assistant and Cytology departments
- Complete case assignment reporting to Pathologists
- Specimen filing and disposal preparation
- Perform reagent rotation and disposal on tissue processors
- Perform bone marrow aspirate smears
- Maintain inventory and stocking of department supplies, including requisitions and kits for send-outs
- Follow up with verifications and communicate to ensure resolution in a timely manner
- Prioritize with a high emphasis on quality while working in a high-pressure, data-driven department in a fast-paced environment
- Basic knowledge of biology and medical terminology
- Knowledge of Cytology, Molecular, and Histology accessioning, pre-accessioning, and verification requirements for specimens, insurance, and additional testing
Requirements
- Education and experience equivalent to a high school diploma required
- Associate degree supplemented with one to three years of experience in a clinical setting preferred
- Basic knowledge of biology and medical terminology
- Knowledge of handling chemicals and biohazardous materials
- Skill in communication and collaborating both orally and in writing
- Skill in effectively working with all levels of the organization
- Ability to effectively troubleshoot and problem-solve issues
- Ability to work independently or in small or large groups
- General knowledge of good laboratory practices and aseptic technique
Schedule
Monday - Friday, 3:00 pm - 11:30 pm
Pay
$47,840 annually (non-exempt), paid semi-monthly on an eight-hour per day, forty-hour per week schedule. Final salary offer subject to multiple factors, including candidate experience and expertise, geographic location of the role, and current market data.
