About the Role

The Laboratory Assistant supports the daily operational, logistical, and administrative functions of the laboratory. This includes accessioning patient requisitions and specimens, coordinating specimen courier and overnight shipping operations, maintaining laboratory inventory and purchasing, and supporting laboratory administrative processes. The Laboratory Assistant collaborates with laboratory leadership and staff to ensure accurate and timely specimen handling and to contribute to process improvements.

This is an hourly, non-exempt, union-eligible position.

Responsibilities

  • Specimen Accessioning: Accessions patient requisitions and specimens using the Laboratory Information System (LIS)
  • Shipping and Courier Coordination: Coordinates courier and overnight shipping (FedEx) communications and operations between the central laboratory, shipping vendor representatives, and practice managers at off-site locations
  • Inventory and Purchasing: Maintains laboratory inventory and submits orders to purchasing
  • Laboratory Administration and Support:
    • Supports laboratory administrative processes, including patient reporting
    • Supports ancillary laboratory duties as assigned
    • Follows laboratory policies and procedures
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Schedule

This role requires availability during core business hours of 8 a.m. through 5 p.m. Eastern Time and occasional work during evenings and weekends based on operational needs, project timelines, or system implementations. Schedules will include evenings and Saturdays based on health center hours, patient needs, and operational requirements.

Travel Requirements

Travel may be required based on operational needs. The ability to travel within the service area is required; a valid driver’s license and proof of insurance may be required.

Working Conditions

  • Work is primarily performed in a health center or clinical office environment with regular interaction with patients, staff, and the public
  • Regular and timely attendance at in-person and/or virtual meetings, trainings, and events is required
  • Occasional travel between assigned sites within the service area is required
  • The role requires prolonged periods of standing, walking, and computer use and may involve frequent interruptions and time-sensitive demands
  • Work involves exposure to confidential or sensitive information; adherence to patient privacy and safety standards is required
