Duties and Responsibilities

  • Oversee laboratory setup and breakdown, coordinate with faculty members regarding their ongoing needs, and generate ideas and suggestions related to lab setup, experiments, and improvements to enhance the course curriculum.
  • Ensures that the laboratory facilities, materials, and equipment are kept clean, operational, and in a safe condition; responsible for maintaining lab coats (inventory, maintenance, cleaning & repairs), including submitting invoices for payment to the EH&S Office.
  • Maintains the organization of drawers, cabinets, and other laboratory storage areas.
  • Manages the laboratory stockroom(s), and inventory supplies.
  • Responsible for ordering supplies and equipment and verifying receipts.
  • Ensures that all the equipment remains operational by understanding operating instructions, maintaining equipment logs, troubleshooting breakdowns, maintaining supplies, performing preventive maintenance, and scheduling repairs.
  • Affixes with the Safety Office with conducting lab orientation and lab safety training with new students, faculty, and adjunct faculty each semester.
  • Assists the Safety Office with managing waste streams and maintaining government compliance procedures; reports non-compliance and any other issues found to the EH&S office.
  • Understands and follows the University's Chemical Hygiene Plan and Safety Plan.
  • Affixes with the EH&S Office with overseeing the proper disposal of waste from the laboratories.
  • Maintains a current inventory for the laboratory and ensures the currency of material safety data sheets.
  • Ensures that current inventories are available to all relevant parties.
  • Works with the university safety officer to ensure access to inventory information for emergency responders.
  • Affixes with the EH&S Office with maintaining records and logs of all safety equipment inspections.
  • Participates in the life of the university by attending and participating in group and discipline meetings.
  • Remains current in instrument usage and laboratory management and safety through participation in professional development opportunities.
  • Works with the faculty in the development and set-up of new lab experiments.
  • Other duties as assigned.

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

    • Knowledge of laboratory procedures.
    • Knowledge of general safety protocol.
    • Ability to work safely in a laboratory environment.
    • Knowledge of use and preparation of chemicals and reagents.
    • Verbal and written communication skills.
    • Ability to operate a personal computer and Microsoft Office.
    • Ability to perform physical activities, such as, but not limited to lifting heavy items (up to 50 pounds unassisted), bending, standing, climbing and walking.
    • Ability to carry out written directions.
    • Ability to maintain cooperative working relationships; demonstrating sensitivity and respect for a diverse population.

      Minimum Qualifications

      • Associate degree in Electrical or Computer Engineering or a closely related field.
      • At least 2 years of experience working in a laboratory setting as an employee or student worker.
      • In lieu of a degree, any appropriate combination of relevant education, experience, and/or certifications may be considered.
      • Preferred Qualifications

        • Bachelor’s degree in electrical or computer engineering.
        • Experience with electronics test equipment.
        • Experience with inventory management systems, preventive maintenance programs, and OSH/EH&S compliance.
        • Technical skills.
        • Experience/familiarity with PCB assembly and soldering.
        • Experience with Oscilloscope, Ammeter, Voltmeter, multimeters, function generators, electronic troubleshooting, and repair.
        • Experience with MATLAB/Python and circuits simulation software (multiline, LTSpice etc.).
        • Required Licenses, Certifications, and/or Other Specific Requirements of Law

          • Must possess a valid driver’s license.
          • This position requires a criminal background check.
          • This position is subject to federal and state privacy regulations.
          • Normal Work Schedule

            • Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m.
            • Occasional overtime (weekends and evenings) may be required.
            • Must be willing to work flexible hours.

              Target Hiring Salary

              • $23.22 to $24.52 an hour commensurate with experience.
