Job Summary
The Department of Chemistry is seeking a Laboratory Technician 1 to assist in servicing chemistry courses on the Storrs campus. Under the direction of the Chemistry Laboratory Manager, the incumbent will work under the Chemistry Department’s Teaching Laboratory Services unit, which supports the Chemistry Department’s undergraduate laboratory operations.
Duties And Responsibilities
- Prepare and test routine laboratory experiments for undergraduate courses.
- Aid in modifying experiments as needed.
- Work with a wide range of chemicals to prepare reagents and solutions for experiments.
- Set up and maintain equipment for laboratory experiments safely and quickly in a fast-paced environment.
- Dismantle, clean, and inspect the equipment after use.
- Frequently moves waste containers and reagent trays weighing 25 lbs to and from laboratory benches, under-hood cabinets, and carts.
- Create and provide procedural notes for teaching assistants (TAs), and assist TAs with routine technical problems related to laboratory exercises.
- Aid in identifying and resolving routine experimental problems.
- Aid in the maintenance and minor repair of lab equipment to ensure safe use and proper operation.
- Maintain and monitor inventory levels and ensure the security of supplies and equipment.
- Aid in creating and maintaining appropriate records including standard operating procedures, experimental checklists, and safety documentation.
- Work assigned schedule, which varies by semester to support morning, afternoon, and evening classes, with the possibility of working weekends.
- Aid in the enforcement of departmental safety rules.
- Perform related tasks as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in chemistry or a related field.
- One to two years of experience.
- Demonstrated experience with concepts, practices, and standard laboratory procedures in chemistry.
- Demonstrated experience with commonly accepted safety practices in chemistry.
- Demonstrated experience explaining laboratory procedures.
- Demonstrated interpersonal and communication skills.
- Demonstrated attention to detail.
- Experience with Microsoft Word and Excel.
Preferred Qualifications
- B.S. degree in Chemistry.
- Prior work experience in a laboratory setting.
- Experience writing and communicating laboratory procedures and results in a professional setting.
- Ability to engage, connect, and work with diverse student, administrative, and faculty populations and provide a commitment to the values of diversity, equity, and inclusion in an educational setting.
- Proficient in Microsoft PowerPoint.
