Laboratory Scientist/MLS/CLS/MT Client Services Rep – Nights

About the Role

The Medical Technologist Client Services Representative (MT CSR) serves as the technical liaison between the Department of Pathology and the VCUHS environment. The MT CSR provides accurate and timely technical results, critical results, and information to requesting physicians and other healthcare providers for use in the diagnosis and treatment of disease. This role requires excellent customer service skills for both internal and external customers, a positive and professional interpersonal style, and a strong commitment to teamwork. Compliance with HIPAA regulations is mandatory in all communications.

Responsibilities

• Provides customer service and laboratory-related communication regarding specimen collection, submission, and reporting of laboratory results to healthcare providers in a timely manner.
• Handles incoming and outgoing communication with different customer groups.
• Provides accurate and timely technical results, critical results, and information to requesting physicians and other healthcare providers.
• Communicates patient results clearly, accurately, and effectively to laboratory clients in a timely manner.
• Serves as a resource to clients regarding test requirements, specimen submission, and other laboratory policies and procedures.
• Serves as a dispatch service for lab-related courier needs.
• Assists with training new staff.
• Performs area-specific support duties and other duties as assigned.

Patient Population

Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide equitable care appropriate to the age of the patients served. This includes understanding the principles of growth and development across the lifespan and the ability to assess data reflective of a patient’s status to interpret appropriate information for their age-specific needs. Patient populations served include:

• Neonates (0-4 weeks)
• Infant (1-12 months)
• Pediatrics (1-12 years)
• Adolescents (13-17 years)
• Adults (18-64 years)
• Geriatrics (65 years and older)

Requirements

• Bachelor’s Degree in Medical Technology (BSMT), Medical Laboratory Science (BSMLS), or Clinical Laboratory Science (BSCLS) from an accredited program.
• Current Certification as a Medical Technologist (MT) or Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) by the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP), Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) by the National Credentialing Agency (NCA), American Medical Technologists (AMT), or equivalent ASCP categorical certification.
• For positions requiring credential maintenance, team members must obtain the required Continuing Education (CE) hours as specified by the Board of Certification Credential Maintenance Program (CMP). (Note: Individuals with ASCP certification prior to January 1, 2004, are exempt from this requirement.)
• Ability to work rotating weekends, holidays, and on-call shifts as required for emergency coverage.

Preferred Qualifications

• Master’s Degree in Clinical Laboratory Science (MSCLS) from an accredited program.
• Previous experience as a Medical Technologist, Clinical Lab Scientist, or Medical Lab Scientist.

Working Conditions

• General office environment with periods of high stress and fluctuating workloads.
• May be exposed to adverse weather conditions, high noise levels, bright lights, and limited hazardous substances or body fluids.
• Required to travel to off-site locations, occasionally in adverse weather conditions.
• May be exposed to human blood and other potentially infectious materials; universal precautions and personal protective equipment are mandatory.
• Frequent interruptions and the need to exercise universal precautions, use personal protective equipment, and follow infection control policies.

Physical Requirements

Hazards

• Exposure to toxic, caustic, chemicals, detergents, moving mechanical parts, dust, fumes, and potential electrical shock.
• Exposure to x-ray/electromagnetic energy, high-pitched noises, and gaseous risks.
• Use of latex gloves.
