About the role

The Med Tech 3 will perform the duties of a technical specialist in the laboratory, performing advanced analysis in specific laboratory areas and diagnostic tests on patient samples. This role assists supervisors with overseeing daily operations of specific laboratory sections and serves as the primary technical resource.

Responsibilities

• Serve as the primary technical resource, providing advanced problem-solving related to laboratory testing, interpretation of results, and equipment performance.
• Perform moderate and highly complex laboratory tests, procedures, and analyses according to the laboratory’s standard operating procedures with minimal supervision.
• Perform, maintain, review, and document laboratory quality control procedures to ensure the accuracy of test results.
• Coordinate maintenance and troubleshooting of laboratory equipment.
• Receive, prepare, process biological specimens for testing and/or transportation to the main lab or reference labs.
• Assist with maintaining daily operations oversight of assigned lab area and/or shift, including monitoring and managing inventory.
• Ensure the laboratory adheres to established safety, quality, and regulatory standards.
• Provide technical guidance, training, and teaching to staff, students, and residents, including competency assessments.
• Participate in laboratory Process Improvement activities, proficiency testing, and ensure proficiency testing is performed in the same manner as patient specimens.
• Develop and evaluate new methodologies; write, review, and revise technical procedures.
• Actively participate in and prepare for CAP inspections, ensuring laboratory compliance with all accreditation agencies.
• Perform other duties as assigned and participate in special projects to support the mission of VCUHS and the Department of Pathology.
• Promote teamwork and effective communication across departments.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s Degree in Clinical Laboratory Science (BSCLS) from an accredited program OR a Bachelor's Degree in a Biological Science* plus graduation from an NAACLS-accredited CLS/MT certificate program OR Bachelor’s Degree in a Life Science/Biological Science or Chemical Science with 8 or more years of on-the-job training in a hospital healthcare environment in a specific lab discipline performing high complexity testing (categorical or generalist certification required).
• Current Certification as a Medical Technologist (MT) or Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) by the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP), Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) by the National Credentialing Agency (NCA), American Medical Technologists (AMT), or equivalent ASCP categorical certification.
• Minimum of three (3) years of clinical work experience as a Medical Technologist/Medical Laboratory Scientist/Clinical Laboratory Scientist. Experience may be specific to specialty areas such as Flow Cytometry, Microbiology, Immunology, Molecular Biology, Transfusion Medicine, Clinical Chemistry, or Toxicology.
• Individuals with required credential maintenance must obtain continuing education (CE) hours as required by The Board of Certification Credential Maintenance Program (CMP) and a minimum of 15 CE hours annually (excludes those ASCP-certified prior to January 1, 2004).

Preferred Qualifications

• Master’s Degree in Clinical Lab Science (MSCLS) from an accredited program.

Working Conditions

• Periods of high stress and fluctuating workloads may occur.

• May be exposed to high noise levels, bright lights, hazardous substances, body fluids, or infectious materials.
• May have periods of constant interruptions or prolonged working alone.

Patient Population served: Neonates (0-4 weeks), Infant (1-12 months), Pediatrics (1-12 years), Adolescents (13-17 years), Adults (18-64 years), Geriatrics (65 years and older).
