About the role

The New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (NYCDOHMH), Public Health Laboratory seeks to hire a Laboratory Microbiologist II to join a team of over 200 professionals dedicated to safeguarding the health of New York City residents.

Responsibilities

• Conducts routine and complex tests on clinical specimens and environmental samples.
• Performs BSL3 testing of foods suspected to contain select agents (such as Bacillus anthracis and Yersinia pestis).
• Processes samples submitted by law enforcement for biothreat agent testing in the BSL-3 using LRN microbiological/molecular testing for BT agents.
• Serves on the BTRL after-hours on-call schedule and acts as a first responder by the PHL.
• Ensures and maintains quality control and assurance activities.
• Follows OSH safety guidelines.
• Operates and maintains laboratory equipment and performs quality control procedures.
• Participates in cross-training program at PHL for outbreak events as needed.
• Maintains laboratory inventory supplies.
• Performs other duties as required.

Requirements

• Possess or be eligible for a New York State clinical Laboratory Technologist License as described in Article 165 of the New York State Education Law effective September 7, 2008.
• Knowledge of standard infection precaution procedures and clinical testing experience.

Qualifications

• A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university, accredited by regional, national, professional, or specialized agencies recognized as accrediting bodies by the U.S. Secretary of Education and by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) with a major in the biological, chemical, or physical sciences or medical technology, and one year of experience as a microbiologist performing at the technician or higher level in a clinical or environmental laboratory setting.
• An associate degree in medical technology, or sixty college credits from an accredited college or university, accredited by regional, national, professional, or specialized agencies recognized as accrediting bodies by the U.S. Secretary of Education and by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) including six credits in mathematics and six credits in either chemistry or biology and three years of experience as described in “1” above.
• A four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent approved by a State’s Department of Education or a recognized accrediting organization plus any combination of college education and experience described in “1" or “2” above to make up the equivalent of five years of education and experience.

Preferred Skills

• One year of experience credit will be given for each 30 semester credits of college education which includes at least 3 credits in mathematics and at least 3 credits in either chemistry or biology.
