Laboratory Manager, Chemistry and Chemical Biology (fixed-term)

About the Role

The Laboratory Manager is responsible for managing and executing the operations and instruction of lab facilities used in undergraduate and graduate chemistry and chemical biology education courses, as well as providing support for faculty research lab facilities. This role acts as a bridge between faculty, staff, and students to ensure top-level performance, safety, and innovation within all laboratory environments.

This is a fixed-term position, up to 35 hours per week, with an anticipated end date of June 30, 2027. The schedule includes four (4) days on campus (Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays) and one (1) day working from home.

Responsibilities

• Lab Operations & Support (up to 15 hours per week):
  • Manage day-to-day operations of biology teaching and research labs, including purchasing, organizing, and setting up course materials, reagents, and equipment.
  • Coordinate with instructors and Teaching Assistants (TAs) to execute lab transitions and student research.
  • Oversee the distribution and return of gas containers.
• Teaching Innovation (up to 10 hours per week):
  • Partner with faculty to develop and pilot modern, cost-effective teaching methods for large-enrollment biology lab courses, aligning with the department's strategic vision.
  • Simplify experimental procedures for first-year students and assess learning outcomes to improve practices.
  • Implement digital tools like Electronic Lab Notebooks (ELNs) and Benchling to modernize data collection and reagent organization.
• Safety & Maintenance (up to 10 hours per week):
  • Act as the visible leader of a "safety first" culture and collaborate with the Office of Environmental Health and Safety to ensure compliance.
  • Conduct annual safety training for instructional staff.
  • Coordinate with campus facilities for day-to-day maintenance, emergency responses, and modernization projects.
  • Assist with annual capital asset inventories and safety inspections.

Requirements

• Education:
  • Required: Master’s degree in biology or chemical biology discipline.
  • Preferred: Doctoral degree.
• Experience:
  • Required: Minimum of 2–3 years in an undergraduate and/or graduate biology lab-based setting.
  • Preferred: Minimum of 5 years of experience.

• Proven leadership with strong organizational skills, urgency, and multitasking abilities.
• Clear verbal and written communication, with the ability to work effectively with students, faculty, and staff.
• Strong knowledge of lab safety and operations, proactive in following protocols.
• Ability to partner with leadership to achieve departmental strategic goals.
• Fiscal responsibility in managing budgets within resource-restricted environments.
• Capacity to engage students and contribute to their success.

Pay

The hourly base range for this position is $30–$40, determined based on experience, education, skills, internal equity, market data, and organizational considerations. This range represents base pay only and excludes additional forms of compensation.
