Laboratory Care Technician

Fairview is seeking a part-time Laboratory Care Technician for the Acute Care Laboratory at M Health Fairview Southdale Hospital in Edina, MN. This role involves a 64-hour pay period every two weeks, with shifts primarily during the day and occasional evenings, including every other weekend rotation.

Schedule

• Day shifts: 5:00 AM – 1:30 PM or 6:00 AM – 2:30 PM
• Evening shifts: 1:15 PM – 9:45 PM or 2:30 PM – 11:00 PM
• Training: 5-week full-time program (Monday–Friday, daytime hours)
  • Week 1: Remote orientation (Monday, 8:00 AM – 4:30 PM) and on-site training (Tuesday–Wednesday, 7:00 AM – 3:30 PM)
  • Weeks 2–5: On-site training (5:00 AM – 1:30 PM or 6:00 AM – 2:30 PM)

About the Role

The Acute Care Laboratory at M Health Fairview Southdale Hospital operates 24/7, providing testing in clinical hematology, chemistry, blood gas, coagulation, urinalysis, transfusion medicine, and blood collection/processing. This role involves:

• Collecting blood specimens in inpatient, outpatient, and pre-surgical settings
• Ensuring safe and secure specimen handling and point-of-care testing
• Accurately entering orders and collection data into the Laboratory Information System (LIS)
• Monitoring computer logs, scheduling tests/procedures, and providing results via LIS/HIS or phone
• Prioritizing work to optimize patient outcomes and adhering to established guidelines
• Adjusting care approaches to reflect developmental and cultural differences in the population served

Additional duties may be assigned as needed.

Requirements

• At least 18 years of age
• One of the following:
  • Completion of a formal phlebotomy education program
  • Three months of full-time clinical phlebotomy and laboratory experience
  • Enrollment in the final year of an MLT or MLS program
• Successful customer service background in a diverse cultural setting

Preferred Qualifications

• Prior laboratory experience in a hospital or clinic setting

Pay

Compensation is determined by factors such as skills, knowledge, education, experience, and market conditions. Pay equity and internal team equity are prioritized in offer decisions.
