Fairview is seeking a Full Time (1.0 FTE) Laboratory Care Technician (LCT) to support the Northwest Clinics, including M Health Fairview Clinic - Elk River, M Health Fairview Clinic - Andover, and M Health Fairview Clinic - Rogers. The primary location is Elk River with hours of 8:00 AM–4:30 PM, though hours may vary between 7:30 AM and 6:00 PM when covering shifts at Andover or Rogers. This role includes one 8-hour shift at an Urgent Care location approximately every 5th Saturday. The schedule is subject to change to meet staffing needs, including floating to other nearby clinics.

About the role

The Laboratory Care Technician (LCT) plays an important role in providing quality, proficient, and professional laboratory services while interacting with patients, families, and co-workers. The LCT performs laboratory specimen collection, safe and secure specimen handling, and point-of-care testing. Responsibilities include accurately entering orders and collection information into the Laboratory Information System (LIS) and associated subsystems, monitoring computer logs for incomplete work, scheduling tests/procedures, and providing results in LIS/HIS and over the phone.

Responsibilities

  • Follows established guidelines to obtain biological specimens and perform procedures.
  • Collects biological specimens with appropriate technique following established Standard Operating Procedures (SOP).
  • Performs phlebotomy at various sites and communicates special handling needs of the specimen.
  • Uses appropriate communications skills to meet patient/family and other customer needs.
  • Demonstrates proficiency with point-of-care testing and/or waived testing.
  • May perform EKGs.
  • May train others in phlebotomy skills.
  • Ensures specimens are acceptable for testing, including proper identification.
  • Processes specimens prior to testing or sending to reference labs.
  • Performs daily quality control, troubleshooting, and equipment maintenance.
  • Monitors inventory, ordering, and restocking supplies.
  • Mentors and teaches students.
  • Prioritizes work to achieve optimal patient outcomes.
  • Transports blood and body fluids under proper conditions and in a timely and safe manner.
  • Seeks assistance appropriately for problem or unusual situations.
  • Accurately enters and releases order and collection information into LIS and subsystems.
  • Monitors computer logs for incomplete work.
  • Schedules tests/procedures.
  • Provides results in LIS/HIS and reports over the phone.
  • Acquires additional computer skills as appropriate to the work area.
  • Supports and adheres to laboratory quality assurance program.
  • Maintains a safe work environment.
  • Adheres to safety protocols.
  • Follows infection control guidelines.
  • Responds appropriately to emergent situations.

Requirements

  • High School graduate, equivalent, or a higher degree. Diploma, GED, equivalency evaluation, or transcript must be provided.
  • Completion of one of the following:
    • A formal phlebotomy education program, or
    • Three months of full-time clinical phlebotomy and laboratory experience, or
    • Enrollment in an MLT or MLS program including completion of a phlebotomy course.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Successful customer service background within a diverse cultural setting.
  • Ability to work under stress in a variety of situations.
  • Ability to exercise independent judgment.
  • Demonstrates manual dexterity.
  • Demonstrates competence and proficient skills in collecting blood samples.
  • Basic Life Support (American Heart Assoc or Red Cross) certification required within 90 days when working in a clinic setting (not required at Maple Grove Ambulatory Care Center).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior laboratory experience in a hospital or clinic setting in a similar capacity.
  • Some positions will require reliable transportation.
