Laboratory Care Technician

This is a full-time 1.0 FTE position located at M Health Fairview Clinic - Rosemount in Rosemount, MN. The primary schedule is 7:30 AM – 4:00 PM, Monday through Friday. This role may require training at other Southeast region clinics (Apple Valley, Lakeville, Eagan, Oxboro, Cottage Grove) to cover staffing needs. Additionally, the position includes a weekend rotation, currently working every 6th Saturday from 8:45 AM – 5:15 PM at a south region urgent care clinic (Eagan, Lakeville, Bloomington, or Edina).

About the Role

The Laboratory Care Technician (LCT) plays a critical role in providing quality, proficient, and professional laboratory services while interacting with patients, families, and coworkers in alignment with M Health Fairview Values. The LCT performs specimen collection, ensures safe and secure specimen handling, and conducts point-of-care testing. Responsibilities include accurately entering orders and collection information into the Laboratory Information System (LIS), monitoring logs for incomplete work, scheduling tests/procedures, and providing results via LIS/HIS or phone. Attention to detail and accuracy are essential for delivering high-quality laboratory services.

Responsibilities

• Follows established guidelines to obtain biological specimens and perform procedures.
• Collects biological specimens using appropriate techniques and Standard Operating Procedures (SOP).
• Performs phlebotomy at various sites and communicates special handling needs of specimens.
• Uses effective communication skills to meet patient, family, and customer needs.
• Demonstrates proficiency with point-of-care testing and/or waived testing.
• May perform EKGs.
• May train others in phlebotomy skills.
• Ensures specimens are acceptable for testing, including proper identification.
• Processes specimens prior to testing or sending to reference labs.
• Performs daily quality control, troubleshooting, and equipment maintenance.
• Monitors inventory, orders, and restocks supplies.
• Mentors and teaches students.
• Prioritizes work to achieve optimal patient outcomes.
• Transports blood and body fluids under proper conditions in a timely and safe manner.
• Seeks assistance appropriately for problem or unusual situations.
• Accurately enters and releases order and collection information into LIS and subsystems.
• Monitors computer logs for incomplete work.
• Schedules tests/procedures and provides results in LIS/HIS or reports over the phone.
• Acquires additional computer skills as needed for the work area.
• Supports and adheres to the laboratory quality assurance program.
• Maintains a safe work environment and adheres to safety protocols.
• Follows infection control guidelines.
• Responds appropriately to emergent situations.

Requirements

• High school graduate, equivalent, or higher degree. Diploma, GED, equivalency evaluation, or transcript must be provided.
• One of the following:
  • Completion of a formal phlebotomy education program, or
  • Three months of full-time clinical phlebotomy and laboratory experience, or
  • Enrollment in an MLT or MLS program including completion of a phlebotomy course.
• Must be at least 18 years of age.
• Successful customer service background within a diverse cultural setting.
• Ability to work under stress in a variety of situations.
• Ability to exercise independent judgment.
• Demonstrates manual dexterity.
• Demonstrates competence and proficient skills in collecting blood samples.
• Basic Life Support (American Heart Association or Red Cross) certification required within 90 days when working in a clinic setting (not required at Maple Grove Ambulatory Care Center).

Preferred Qualifications

• Prior laboratory experience in a hospital or clinic setting in a similar capacity.
• Some positions may require reliable transportation.

Pay

Compensation is determined by factors such as skills, knowledge, relevant education, experience, and market conditions. The organization prioritizes pay equity and considers internal team equity when making offers. Hiring at the maximum of the posted range is not typical. If eligible, a sign-on bonus may be offered based on the approved program at the time of the offer.
