About the role
Performs successful specimen collection while exhibiting competence, professionalism, excellent communication, and public relations skills. Demonstrates a thorough knowledge of the healthcare delivery system and familiarity with clinical laboratory services.
Responsibilities
- Collects adequate and correct blood specimens by venipuncture or microcollection techniques on adults, children, and infants.
- Facilitates collection, processing, and transportation of clinical laboratory specimens.
- Accurately processes laboratory orders using athena and LabDAQ in a timely manner.
- Performs and documents results of waived laboratory tests according to procedure.
- Provides technical and clerical support to ensure efficient operations and positive staff and patient relations.
- Follows departmental policies to correctly identify patients before obtaining specimens.
- Correctly labels all specimens and maintains accurate log records and worksheets.
- Promotes patient comfort and well-being during specimen collection.
- Follows Universal Precautions and OSHA Bloodborne Pathogen Standards; respects HIPAA guidelines.
- Provides collection instructions and processes specimens for urinalysis, 24-hour urine samples, and cultures.
- Depending on site location, may assist with Patient Services Representative activities, including:
- Coordinating New Patient Management (distributing packets, maintaining records, initial screenings).
- Conducting pre-visit chart prep.
- Managing patient and provider schedules.
- Following standard processes and protocols for clinical activities (medication refills, order follow-through, lab reporting).
- Tracking and following up on patient issues with clinical support.
- Issuing pre-appointment lab and health maintenance reminders.
- Managing web portal scheduling and registration activities.
- Conducting patient check-in and check-out activities.
- Flexibility to cover at other sites if needed.
Requirements
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- 1+ years of phlebotomy experience preferred.
Skills
- Uses discretion and tact in all patient interactions.
- Projects professionalism in appearance and conduct.
- Ability to resolve problems related to patient samples and computer issues.
- Effectively distinguishes between low and high-priority activities.
- Clear and concise communication with accuracy and confidence.
- Basic keyboarding and computer literacy.
- Appreciation of various health insurance plans, including Medicare.
- Ability to work as a team player in a busy setting with interruptions.
- Flexibility to adjust hours to meet staffing demands.
- Ability to travel to alternative work sites.
- Maintains patient confidentiality.
Physical Requirements
- Good hearing, visual acuity, and fine motor skills for routine tasks.
- Ability to stand for long periods.
- Ability to lift 30 lbs.
Pay
$20.20 - $24.95 per hour for a full-time position. Actual compensation will be determined based on experience, skills, qualifications, and other job-related factors. Employees may also be eligible for additional compensation, including incentive or commission-based programs where applicable.
