Laboratory Assistant*

About the role

We are looking for a Laboratory Assistant in Salt Lake City, UT (1945 Fremont Drive, 84104). The role involves providing basic assistance to laboratory operations and maintaining a sterile and safe work environment.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain a clean laboratory by discarding waste and cleaning/sanitizing countertops, walls, floors, shelves, equipment, sinks, and water baths using cleaning solvents.
  • Properly store chemicals, reagents, and supplies, and maintain adequate stock of these materials.
  • Clean and decontaminate equipment, glassware, metal instruments, sinks, water baths, tables, and test panels using solvents, water, acetone bath, cloth, hot-air drier, brushes, and rags.
  • Prepare and use cleaning solutions according to specifications.
  • Perform quality control checks such as temperature checks, balance verification, or detergent residue testing as required by department leadership.
  • Assist other laboratory personnel with testing procedures as instructed.
  • Maintain equipment, supplies, and instrumentation in working order, including preventative maintenance.
  • Maintain knowledge of the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) required for job responsibilities.
  • Support corporate quality and continuous improvement processes.
  • Ensure a safe working environment and participate in audits.
  • Maintain inventory, rotate supplies, discard expired materials (dry, refrigerated, frozen), and retain materials as directed.
  • Complete assigned tasks under supervision while working with the team to accomplish department goals.
  • Perform opening and closing duties as assigned.
  • Clean glassware and other containers and return them to the laboratory for reuse.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
  • Operate in an ethical and Code of Conduct-compliant manner at all times.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Entry-level position; ability to follow specific instructions.
  • General knowledge of Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) to enter and process client data.
  • Ability to operate a company vehicle (safe driving skills required).
  • Analytical skills to complete analysis procedures and determine microorganism or analyte concentration.
  • Basic knowledge of laboratory safety procedures and practices.
  • Physical dexterity for manipulating samples.
  • Interpersonal skills to work effectively within teams.

Skills

  • Attention to Detail: Ensuring cleanliness, proper storage, and accurate maintenance of laboratory equipment and supplies.
  • Knowledge of Laboratory Procedures and Safety: Understanding proper cleaning, decontamination, and safety protocols.
  • Organizational and Time Management Skills: Efficiently managing inventory and completing tasks within designated timeframes.
  • Maintaining a Clean and Safe Laboratory Environment: Consistently following safety protocols to prevent contamination and hazards.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

The role is based in a laboratory with proper lighting and temperature control. Occasional exposure to laboratory fumes, chemicals, and materials may occur. The incumbent will work near autoclaves and washers with increased temperatures and must wear masks, laboratory coats, and insulated gloves when handling media. Frequent lifting of up to 50 pounds is required. Extended periods of standing are expected, and occasional use of a motor vehicle for sample pick-up and delivery may be necessary.

Pay

$18.00 - $21.00 hourly USD
