Laboratory Animal Technician

About the role

This position is for two identical roles supporting the Division of Comparative Medicine at UNC-Chapel Hill. Responsibilities include daily care of research animals, facility maintenance, investigator support, and emergency duties during adverse weather or other emergencies. Weekend and holiday work is required occasionally on a rotating basis.

Responsibilities

  • Daily care of research animals, including cage cleaning and sanitation
  • Animal observation, handling, restraint, and treatments
  • Investigator support and communication
  • Facility maintenance and working with USDA-regulated species
  • Emergency duties during adverse weather and/or other emergency situations

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Animal technician training
  • Experience in a laboratory animal setting
  • Working knowledge of breeding, weaning, and record-keeping
  • Certification by the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) at the ALAT level or higher strongly preferred

Physical/Mental Requirements

  • Ability to move/lift items weighing up to 50 pounds with or without accommodation
  • Prolonged and/or repetitive reaching, bending, and twisting
