Laboratory Animal Tech II

Hiring range: $21.00 – $23.00 per hour. Full-time, non-exempt, regular position located in Lebanon/Hanover, NH. Onsite only; 40 hours per week, 12 months per year, including weekends and holidays.

About the role

The Laboratory Animal Technicians in the Center for Comparative Medicine and Research (CCMR) provide specific care to laboratory animals in a safe and sanitary manner in accordance with federal, state, and local regulations, guidelines, and policies on the use of laboratory animals in biomedical research. This is a developmental position involving intensive training and increased responsibility as proficiency is demonstrated. Upon completion of training and when management determines full performance has been met, the incumbent may be promoted non-competitively to the next level.

Responsibilities

• Animal Care – Handles and cares for animals on a daily basis; observes and maintains awareness of the physical needs and condition of the animals; reports changes to veterinary staff; communicates with principal investigators and their staff concerning the status of research animals; achieves competence in caring for and handling the variety of animal species housed in the Animal Resource Center. May administer medications under the direction of a veterinarian; may euthanize animals as needed. 40% of time
• Facility/Habitat Maintenance – Cleans cages using washers and other mechanical equipment; prepares caging and equipment for animal care; maintains sanitary condition of animals and their environment; decontaminates areas as needed; prepares chemicals including mixing appropriate dilutions; performs light maintenance such as replacing bulbs and preventative maintenance of washers; empties waste baskets and cleans floors; maintains equipment maintenance logs. 40% of time
• Environmental Control – Observes and records the condition of an animal’s environment, including temperature, air exchange, and light cycle; applies understanding of problems created by lack of environmental factors. 15% of time
• Administrative – Maintains proper medical and inventory records on individual animals; documents departmental time logs, animal husbandry logs, clinical incident forms, and room supply inventory; receives and stores feed and bedding, ensuring appropriate rotation and inventory; participates in in-house training programs. 5% of time
• Demonstrates professionalism and collegiality through actions, interactions, and communications with others appropriate to an environment welcoming to all.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent plus 1–2 years of experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• At least one year of relevant animal care experience.
• Ability to apply procedures for the care and handling of laboratory animals.
• Capacity to safely and efficiently lift and transport equipment or feed packages of up to 50 lbs.
• Ability to work weekend and holiday schedules.
• Ability to instruct and mentor other technicians.

Preferred Qualifications

• Compliance and training experience.
• Successful completion of the AALAS Laboratory Animal Technician certification.
