Lab Animal Tech II

Job Description

• Provides daily husbandry care to research animals according to department standard operating procedures, state and federal regulations and accrediting agency guidelines.
  • Includes cleaning, sanitizing caging material, fresh food and water, and environmental enrichment.
  • Schedules and provides these tasks as needed.
• Maintains animal health and well-being by monitoring assigned areas.
  • Reports any signs of illness to the Supervisor immediately.
  • Completes required reporting documents and cage notification cards.
• Supports the sentinel surveillance program.
  • Performs bloodletting, fur plucks, and fecal testing on sentinel animals.
  • Prepares samples for transport to offsite diagnostic laboratories.
• Houses newly arriving animal colonies according to department standard operating procedures.
  • Ensures that orders match the posted incoming animal log and assigned cage cards.
  • Reports any discrepancies to the Supervisor immediately.
• Assists with animal treatments and health monitoring of colony animals.
  • Reports any concerns to the Supervisor.
• May assist research staff with training in commonly used techniques such as restraint, bloodletting, and injections.

Essential Qualifications

• High School diploma or GED required.
• Certificate 1 preferred: Laboratory Animal Technician.
• Certificate 2 preferred: Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician.
• Two years experience working with laboratory animals including specialized husbandry techniques.
• Knowledge of basic animal technical procedures such as restraint, bloodletting, sample collection, and routine treatments for laboratory animals.
• Able to work well as part of a team and follow detailed instructions with minimal supervision.
• Basic familiarity with computers and ability to navigate web-based applications.

Preferred Qualifications

• Certification at the AALAS Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician or Laboratory Animal Technician levels.

Physical Demands

• Medium work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and up to 20 pounds of force frequently.
• The job is physical in nature and requires standing and moving around throughout the majority of the shift.

Pay Range

Pay Range: $21.15 - $28.47 per hour. Actual compensation is determined based on several factors including seniority, education, training, relevant experience, relevant certifications, geography of work location, job responsibilities, or other applicable factors permissible by law. Compensation may exceed the base hourly rate depending on shift differentials, call pay, premium pay, overtime pay, and other additional pay practices, as applicable to the position and in accordance with the law.
