About the Program

The Laboratory Animal Sciences Program (LASP) provides exceptional quality animal care and technical support services for animal research performed at the National Cancer Institute at the Frederick National Laboratory for Cancer Research. LASP executes this mission by providing a broad spectrum of state-of-the-art technologies and services focused on the design, generation, characterization, and application of genetically engineered and biological animal models of human disease. These models aim to develop targeted diagnostics and therapies while ensuring safe and humane treatment of animals.

Responsibilities

• Perform a variety of routine tasks associated with general laboratory animal care in biomedical research
• Feed and house laboratory animals
• Handle general laboratory animal housekeeping and cleaning tasks associated with the upkeep of a research animal facility
• Order and stock supplies
• Maintain simple records
• Utilize computer skills for email, training, and basic data entry
• Operate automatic washing and cleaning equipment
• Work schedule may include weekend and holiday hours
• Collect hair, fecal, and blood samples for diagnostic testing
• Work may involve the use of potentially hazardous materials, including biological and chemical carcinogens or radiological materials, requiring the use of personal protective equipment and adherence to strict safety protocols

Requirements

• Possession of a high school diploma (foreign degrees must be evaluated for U.S. equivalency)
• Two (2) years of laboratory animal care experience
• Ability to keep basic records
• Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. and wear respiratory protective equipment as necessary
• Basic computer skills
• Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance

Preferred Qualifications

• Ability to handle laboratory animals (rodents)
• Ability to multi-task
• Excellent organization and observation skills
• Valid driver license

Job Hazards

• Potential exposure to animals and/or animal materials
• Potential exposure to infectious material, requiring medical clearance and immunizations
• Potential exposure to Vaccinia Virus, requiring medical clearance and immunizations

Pay

36,200.00 - 51,788.00 USD
