Laboratory Analyst
The New York City Department of Environmental Protection's (DEP) Bureau of Sustainability Environmental Testing Laboratory seeks a Laboratory Analyst to work in the laboratory located in Queens, New York.
About the role
The Laboratory Analyst will perform routine testing of bulk building material for the presence of Asbestos fibers, calibrate equipment, update data in calibration log books, complete on-line excel bench sheets, document testing of samples, participate in proficiency testing rounds, adhere to all quality control and standard operating procedures, and comply with all safety procedures.

Requirements
- Completed a specialized training course in Microscopic Identification of Asbestos fibers by PLM
- Available to work on the Standby schedule each month
- Valid NYS driver's license due to driving a city vehicle while on standby
Qualifications
- A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college, including or supplemented by 16 semester credits in chemistry and 8 semester credits in any one or a combination of the following areas: chemistry, pharmacology, toxicology, environmental science, forensic science, or other natural science
- Certificate Requirement: At the time of appointment to a clinical laboratory, candidates must possess a valid License as a Clinical Laboratory Technologist issued by the New York State Education Department. This license must be maintained for the duration of employment.
- Additional Qualification Requirements: For Assignment Level II and above, individuals must have, after meeting the minimum requirements described for Assignment Level I, at least two years of fulltime satisfactory experience performing chemical or physical analyses in a laboratory.
- Education may be substituted for experience on the basis of 30 graduate semester credits from an accredited college in any of the areas of study described in the qualification requirements above for one year of experience.
- All candidates must have a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college with the specialized credits as described above.
Preferred Skills
- At least one year’s working experience in an environmental testing laboratory performing testing on environmental samples
- Experience and knowledge of various testing methods
- Possess general knowledge in the area of asbestos testing by polarized light microscopy
- Skills in Microsoft Word, OneDrive, and Excel

The position offers a salary range of $52,518.00 – $90,063.00.

Schedule
Since the laboratory operates 24/7, candidates must be available to work on the Standby schedule each month.
