Responsibilities

  • Prepares for and/or arbitrates or tries complex cases involving large amounts of money, significant precedents, novel and complicated determinations of law and fact, or cases having significant legal, policy or financial implications.
  • Prepares and argues difficult cases and appeals in arbitration; Administrative Tribunals and in the courts.
  • Determines the advisability of presenting witnesses, admissibility of types of evidence and matters of legal strategy.
  • Conducts legal investigations, holds informal hearings, and examines prospective witnesses.
  • Conducts research and prepares legal briefs and memoranda on labor and employment law issues.
  • Reviews and analyze collective bargaining agreements.
  • Reviews and provides interpretations on complex, important or highly technical laws, rules or regulations.
  • Reviews, revises and approves agreements prepared by other attorneys.
  • Analyzes, studies and reports on the effects of city, state and federal legislation.
  • May supervise subordinate attorneys on a case by case basis.
  • May hear and decide cases as a DOE hearing officer.

Qualifications

  • Admission to the New York State Bar; and Three years of satisfactory United States legal experience subsequent to admission to any state bar.
  • Note: Selected candidates must remain Member of the New York State Bar in good standing for the duration of this employment.
  • Preferred: Ability to rapidly understand provisions of applicable law and regulations. Ability to write clearly and concisely. Ability to conduct legal research efficiently.

Pay

$106,607 - $111,107

(Internal candidates who are selected for this position and who currently hold comparable or less senior positions within the DOE will not earn less than their current salary.)
